Theme – go on a mission for vengeance

With a Wild West theme, The True Grit Redemption slot is superbly designed. Nolimit City has designed plenty of Western games, like El Paso Gunfight, so there are expects of this genre. It has a dark and gritty feel and doesn’t remind you of Spaghetti Westerns initially.

With a snowy backdrop, the soundtrack is more in line with theme and the soundtrack could easily feature in a Hollywood blockbuster. The production on this may be the best to date from the first-class provider. The story goes that a crew of bandits are on a mission for vengeance that turns into a harrowing journey which tests the crew’s grit.

Symbols on the reels include A, K, Q, J and 10 royals on wooden pallets as well as 5 crew members. You have Wet Dog, Austin, Chapo, Lily and Boss. Boss is the highest paying symbol and looks a lot like Bill ‘The Butcher’ Cutting from Gangs of New York. 3, 4, 5 or 6 in combination pays 0.5, 0.75, 1.25 or 1.75 x your total stake.

These payouts are dwarfed by the Grit Girl symbol which appears on reels 1 through 4. Payouts of 3 or 4 Grit Girl symbols will award 25 or 500 x your total stake respectively. She looks a lot like activist Greta Thunberg. More importantly, wins from the Grit Girl are multiplied by the multiplier on the sticky wild on the bottom reel, even if its locked or not.

There is a wild symbol which substitutes for all symbols except Grit Girl and the sheriff badge scatter. There are also xNudge, xWays, Infectious xWays and Reel Split symbols which I will go into more detail below. When it comes to the layout, there’s a Top Reel, Main Reel and Bottom Reel:

True Grit Redemption Bonus Features

Cascading Reels feature

When you land a winning combination, the Cascading Reels feature is triggered. Winning symbols disappear with the remaining symbols dropping down. New symbols then drop down to fill the newly vacated spaces allowing for another winning combination to possibly form. The cascades continue as long as you get a win. Each cascade also increases the multiplier of the locked sticky wild.

xWild Transform feature

If you match the symbol in the top reel and the symbol underneath on the same reel, the xWild Transform feature will be activated. Both matching symbols transform into a wild.

xNudge Wild feature

A stacked wild symbol can appear in the bottom reel. When it appears, it always nudges to be fully visible and triggers the xNudge Wild feature. Every nudge upwards increases the wild multiplier by 1. If the xNudge Wild is not part of a win, it folds back down and nudges up for an increased wild multiplier in the following cascade/spin. The values are totalled if you have several wild multipliers.

xWays and Infectious xWays feature

xWays symbols can appear in the top reel with Infectious xWays symbols only appearing in the bottom reel. The xWays transform into a normal symbol and will reveal 2 or 3 symbols of the same kind. This increases the number of ways to win.

Infectious xWays reveal 2 symbols. When in play, it infects all other same symbols on the main reel to expand to the same size. This will give you even more ways to win as more instances of symbols are expanded.

Reel Split feature

Look out for the Reel Split symbol which can only appear in the bottom reel. These double all symbols above it on the main reel and then disappears which causes a bottom reel collapse to the left. Each reel can split a maximum of 2 times. The Grit Girl symbol cannot split though but double it’s multiplier.

Transform ‘Em feature

Torture Spins feature

To trigger the Torture Spins feature, you need to land 3 sheriff badge scatters. 8 free spins are granted. If the scatter is split, 1 extra free spin is awarded per extra part of the split symbol. The game area expands will previously locked positions open for the duration of the feature.

Landing a fourth scatter upgrades the feature into the Dead Spins feature giving you 2 more free spins and 1 extra for each extra split part of the scatter.

Dead Spins feature

The Dead Spins feature is activated when landing 4 sheriff badge scatters. This will give you 10 free spins. You get 1 more for each extra scatter split part. All locked positions are unlocked including the sticky wild multiplier.

Nolimit Bonus feature

Like with more recent Nolimit City slot games, you can find a Nolimit Bonus feature. This isn’t available to UK players though. Anyway, there are 3 options which give you access to the free spins features.

True Grit Redemption Review Summary – all-action gritty Western

The True Grit Redemption slot may be another Western themed game from Nolimit City but this is the best designed one to date. Not your typical Spaghetti Western, the dark and gritty feel makes this game stand out visually from it’s predecessors.

In terms of gameplay, it comes with locked positions like Fire in the Hole and Infectious xWays like Infectious 5. With so many bonus features and special symbols, playing the demo version is a must to get to grips with this action-packed adventure. I didn’t quite understand what was going on till I played it for a couple of hours.

It all comes together, in my opinion, in the free spins feature where all positions are unlocked. Taking 214 spins to trigger one, the Dead Spins feature sees the sticky wild with multiplier in play. However, I found the biggest win potential coming from the Grit Girl symbol (ahem, Greta Thunberg lookalike), especially if her payouts are subject to the sticky wild multiplier.

With 20,220 x stake max wins per spin, the win potential isn’t as high as other Nolimit City slots (150,000 x stake in San Quentin) but the chances of landing the max win is lower to compensate. To summarise, True Grit Redemption is superbly designed and has a lot going on. Just hope the Grit Girl and sticky wild multiplier work their magic so the outlaw crew can complete their quest for vengeance.
