What is Megaways?
Megaways is a game engine created and patented by Big Time Gaming where there are no pre-determined amount of paylines. On each reel, the number of symbols and ways to win changes randomly with every spin.
If you take a 6 reel, 117,649 Megaways slot for example, each reel can contain between 2 and 7 symbols each. If each reel displays 2 symbols each, the number of Megaways will be 324. Seeing 7 symbols on each reel however will give you the maximum 117,649 Megaways:
- 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x2 = 324 Megaways
- 7 x 7 x 7 x 7 x7 x 7 x 7 = 117,649 Megaways
To form a winning combination, you will need to see matching symbols, in any position, on adjacent reels starting from reel 1. For example: you would need to land identical symbols on reels 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 as opposed to on reels 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6. There’s no matching symbol on reel 3 in this example. This is illustrated in the image above.
There are a few different types of Megaways slots available that offer up to 15,625, 16,807, 46,656, 248,832, 100,832, 531,441 and 586,971 ways to win or Megaways. They offer a varying number of reels and symbols per reel but the concept remains the same in all slots.

Bonanza Megaways (Big Time Gaming)
Many slot developers like to build up hype for a new release by calling a slot revolutionary. In the case of the Bonanza Megaways slot, that description is more than justified. Created by Big Time Gaming, it’s a mining themed title that’s is played using a 6 reel machine where the number of ways to win can reach a massive 117,649.

The ‘Reactions’ continue as long as a new winner is formed. Trigger the Free Spins feature and you can play unlimited free spins with an expanding multiplier that increase with each ‘Reaction’ win.
Playable at stake levels of between 20p and £20 per spin and with an RTP of 96%, Bonanza Megaways can deliver payouts of up to 12,000 x stake per spin. It’s a bit of an oldie but Bonanza Megaways remains pure dynamite when it comes to popularity.

White Rabbit Megaways (Big Time Gaming)
If you think that a slot that offers an enormous number of ways to win means a drop in return to player rate then think again. A prime example of a game that offers great RTP rates and potentially enormous action is BTG’s White Rabbit Megaways.
Taking inspiration from Lewis Carroll’s surreal stories, join Alice in Wonderland and chums in this 6 reel slot that offers up to 248,832 ways to win. Gameplay highlights here include randomly added wilds, wilds that come with 3x multipliers attached and free spins, complete with special expanding symbols which can stretch up to 12 symbols high.
What really makes this slot stand out (apart from the slightly trippy visuals) is the incredibly high RTP of 97.24%. With most slots (Megaways or other) hovering around the 96% mark, that figure of almost 98% is pretty eye popping. You can join Alice in this medium to high variance slot on all devices from between 10p and £20 per spin. The max win is 17,420 x stake from a single spin.
Holy Diver Megaways (Big Time Gaming)
If you like slots that come with plenty of back story then you won’t be disappointed with what Holy Diver Megaways has to offer. The action in this 6 reel slot, that offers up to 15,120 ways to win in the base game, centres on a mediaeval knight who travels on a path beneath the reels.
When he reaches a treasure chest, the Knight kicks the treasure chest open to reveal a modifier which could be a wild upgrade, wild reels, exploding wilds that spread to other positions or multiplier wilds.
Trigger the Free Spins feature and you’ll start with 10 free spins. The Knight collects diamonds during the feature which can deliver extra free spins. Multiple retriggers can expand the reels to an enormous 586,789 Megaways. Playable from just 10p per spin with an RTP of 96.54%, you can win up to 23,306 x stake from a single spin during the free spins.
Extra Chilli Megaways (Big Time Gaming)
Known affectionately as Bonanza 2, Extra Chilli Megaways is the sequel to Bonanza (Megaways). With 6 reels and up to 117,649 ways to win, this Mexican street food themed title can be played on all devices from as little as 20p a spin.
In terms of gameplay, it comes with Reactions which gives you the chance to win again and again from each spin. It focuses on the Free Spins feature where you can spin the Free Spins Gamble wheel to win up to 24 free spins.
Once in, the Unlimited Win Multiplier feature can do its thing and increase the multiplier by 1 with each reaction/win. Whilst it has the same extras as Bonanza, it comes with a higher RTP rate of 96.19% (compared to 96%) and higher max wins per spin of 20,000 x stake (vs 12,000 x stake).
The Dog House Megaways (Pragmatic Play)
With developer Pragmatic Play releasing lots of Megaways titles, The Dog House Megaways is their most popular. A Megaways version of the popular original, this fun and bright game has 6 reels and up to 117,649 ways to win. It’s available to play on all devices from 20p a spin.
Look out for wilds which come with random multipliers up to 3x. Called the Wild Multipliers feature, multiple wilds in a win can result in a 126x multiplier boost. This also applies in the 2 free spins features.
The Sticky Wild Free Spins feature gives you up to 20 free spins and up to 7 sticky wilds on each reel. The Raining Wilds Free Spins feature offers up to 30 free spins with up to 6 raining wilds on every free spin. These extras can lead to 12,305 x stake max wins. The Dog House Megaways also boasts a high 96.55% RTP rate.
Who Wants to be a Millionaire Megaways (Big Time Gaming)
The first branded slot to use the Megaways mechanic was this 6 reel classic that’s based on the hit TV quiz show, Who Wants to be a Millionaire Megaways. In the base game, you can expect the usual formula of ‘Reaction’ wins and reels that can offer up to 117,649 Megaways.
Where things really heat up here is during the Hot Seat Free Spins feature. You’ll start with 8 free spins but there are ample opportunities to add to that number via gamble features based on the lifeline elements of the TV show. You can Ask The Audience which will give you a percentage for each of the A, B, C and D options.
For example, you could see B – 80%. Alternatively, Phone a Friend which reveals the most likely winning answer, again offering a percentage. The 50/50 is a coin flip. The more correct guesses you make, the more free spins awarded. Just like the TV show, there are milestones to hit which offer guaranteed awards. For example, reach the milestone rungs at position 2 and 7 on the free spins ladder and you’re guaranteed at least 10 or 20 free spins.
Make it all the way to the top and you’ll play 50 free spins. Free spins come with an expanding multiplier which increases by 1 with each ‘Reaction’ win. The Who Wants to be a Millionaire Megaways RTP is a solid 96.24%. The maximum win is a cool 70,000 x stake. If you enjoy the TV show, this slot should appeal.
Gonzo’s Quest Megaways (NetEnt)
The original Gonzo’s Quest slot is one of the most popular online slots of all time, so it was no surprise to see that NetEnt had given it a Megaways upgrade. Gonzo’s Quest Megaways offers even more opportunities to try and bag some South American gold. Based on the adventures of a Spanish conquistador, it’s a 6 reel game where the number of Megaways can reach up to 117,649.
There are a couple of extras that make this a little different from your common or garden Megaways slot though. The avalanche reels are present and correct. Each successive avalanche win in the base game also increases a multiplier. These can send payouts soaring by 2x, 3x and 5x.
Look out to for unbreakable wilds that remain in place if they make up part of a winner. There’s also a random Earthquake feature where all the lower value symbols are removed. A new avalanche follows made up of high value symbols only.
Things can get even better in the Free Fall feature where you’ll receive a minimum of 9 free spins. The multipliers here start at 3x before rising to 6x, 9x and even 15x if you get on a roll with the avalanche wins. With its high-class sound and visuals, varied gameplay, maximum wins of 10,000 x stake and RTP of 96%, what’s not to like?
Wheel of Fortune Megaways (IGT)
Big Time Gaming has teamed up with IGT to create Wheel of Fortune Megaways. Based on the TV gameshow, it comes with 6 reels and 117,649 ways to win. Playable from 20p per spin, this is a high variance game. It comes with a Wild Megastacks feature where the wild randomly transforms into a Wild Megastack. This sees the wild fill the whole reel giving you up to 7 wilds.
In the Free Spins feature, you can begin with up to 18 free spins. You then spin the Wheel of Fortune which gives you a starting number of Megaways. Look out for the special Expansion symbol which more symbols appear per reel. Each reel can contain 10 symbols each meaning there’s up to 1 million Megaways to play with. Extending reels also gives you more free spins, up to 90 altogether.
Whilst Wheel of Fortune Megaways is quite simple in terms of gameplay, you can win up to 80,150 x your total stake per free spin. With an RTP of 96.46%, there’s enough win potential for this classic gameshow to come back to life.
King of Cats Megaways (Big Time Gaming)
With a big cat theme, King of Cats Megaways is from Big Time Gaming and is essentially 2 slot games in 1. Each offering 6 reels and up to 117,649 ways to win, you choose from the Lion or Puma game. This is known as the PLAYERSELECT mechanic. Each with their own extras, let’s claw a little deeper.
The Lion Game has a 96.72% RTP rate. It comes with a Wild Lion Multiplier feature where colossal wilds up to 4×4 in size appear. These also come with multipliers up to 16x. This can lead to 6,060 x stake wins on each base game spin. Then you have the Lion Free Spins feature where the colossal multiplier wilds are in play. With unlimited free spins to be won, max wins of 24,200 x stake can be won on each free spin.
The Puma Game has a 96.7% RTP rate. There’s a Puma Wilds feature where up to 3 reels can become fully wild. With Puma Wild multipliers up to 4x, you can win up to 1,070 x stake on each base game spin. Then there’s the Puma Free Spins feature where Puma Wild multiplier values increase by up to 3 when a wild lands. With unlimited free spins up for grabs, there are max wins of 56,620 x stake per free spin.
Whilst King of Cats Megaways doesn’t offer anything unique in terms of bonus features, it’s the first Megaways game to offer 2 slots in 1 essentially. Yet another innovative release from Big Time Gaming.
Moriarty Megaways (iSoftBet)
Powered by iSoftBet, Moriarty Megaways begins with 6 reels and up to 117,649 ways to win. With a murder mystery theme, this is probably the best designed game on this top 10 list. Set in Victoria era Baker Street, it’s part of iSoftBet’s Twisted Tales series so it’s quite dark and mysterious.
With a standard Cascading Wins feature, there’s a random Sherlock’s Max Megaways feature where the reels expand to give you the maximum number of ways to win. A cascade follows with the multiplier increasing with each cascade/win.
Then you have the Free Spins feature which has 3 sets of reels. Collect Holmes and/or Watson symbols to unlock the 2 extra reel sets. Holes will give you Max Megaways whilst Watson gives you Mystery Symbols. Altogether, this can lead to 352,947 Megaways.
With a 95.98% RTP rate, you’ll get a win pretty often as the hit frequency rate is 34.3%. More importantly, you can win up to 42,553 x your total stake on each spin. For a unique experience, check out Moriarty Megaways.
Big Time Gaming
The Megaways game mechanic was created by Big Time Gaming. Initially, only BTG slots used it but they have licensed the mechanic to other slot developers/providers. Big Time Gaming slots don’t just come with Megaways and cascading reels. They have lots of other innovations and features such as Reel Adventure and HEARTSTOPPER making them an exciting provider for casinos and players like.
Megaways Slots RTP
One important aspect of any online slot is the Return to Player rate (RTP). This is the amount of money wagered on a casino game that is paid back to the player, on average. With most of these games being high variance, the Megaways RTP is very important.
This is because players want their average return to be as high as possible. Whilst what you win is randomly determined, it makes sense to play a Megaways slot with a higher return rate than one with a lower one.
With the average being just over 96%, Megaways RTP rates tend to be higher than normal video slots. Anyway, here the top 5 Megaways RTP slots:
|White Rabbit Megaways||97.24%|
|Gorilla Gold Megaways||97%|
|Queen of Riches Megaways||96.9%|
|8 Golden Skulls of Holly Roger Megaways||96.86%|
New Megaways Slots
If you like the mechanic, you’ll be happy to know there are plenty of new Megaways slots. With so many providers now licensed to offer Megaways games (see section below), there’s an influx of new releases.
You can expect between 10 to 20 new Megaways slot games every single month. Creator Big Time Gaming doesn’t really release any new ones but Blueprint Gaming, iSoftBet, Pragmatic Play, NetEnt and others have lots in the pipeline. For all new Megaways slots, check out the list above with some of the latest titles near the top.
Megaways Slot Providers
Due to Megaways’ overwhelming popularity, Big Time Gaming have licensed the game engine to various other software providers including:
|Blueprint Gaming||NetEnt||Red Tiger Gaming|
|WMS||NextGen Gaming||Fantasma Games|
|Relax Gaming||Iron Dog Studio||Stakelogic|
If you take Blueprint Gaming for example, the Megaways mechanics has allowed them to rejuvenate old and popular games like Genie Jackpots to now offer an enhanced and exciting mechanic to a winning formula. There’s even a NetEnt Megaways slot as they teamed up with Red Tiger Gaming to deliver Piggy Riches Megaways.
There are more providers who will also be developing games in the near future. Check back for the new Megaways slots. Most of them will come with 117,649 ways to win.
Megaways slots don’t just come with the shape-shifting reels and 117,649 ways to win. You can expect the usual array of features you might find in standard slots. Here are the most commonly found yet exciting Megaways bonus features found:
Cascading Reels feature: when you get a winning combination, the contributing symbols disappear to make way for new symbols. This allows for new winning formations to be created for consecutive wins – this continues until no more new wins are formed. Some Megaways games see cascading wins boosted by an increasing multiplier. Most titles offer cascading reels.
Mystery Symbols feature: lots of Megaways slots come with a Mystery Symbol feature – all instances of the mystery symbol will transform into a randomly chosen symbol for a better chance of forming a winning combination.
Free Spins feature: this is pretty standard in most slots these days. However, many Megaways slots offer you the chance to win unlimited free spins with infinite retriggers – like Red Tiger Gaming’s Mystery Reels Megaways. Some games also offer a certain number of free spins with a minimum number of Megaways.
Unlimited Win Multiplier feature: this is found in the slot’s Free Spins feature. Each cascading win will increase the multiplier by 1. With no limit to how high the multiplier can reach, a losing free spin won’t see the multiplier revert back to 1x. It can only get bigger meaning unlimited multipliers.
Wild Multipliers feature: many slots offer wild multipliers of some sort. If you take Primal Megaways by Blueprint Gaming, you can get wild multipliers up to 6x on each reel. If 1 appears on every reel, they will be multipliers by each other to give you a potential 7,776x multiplier!
Max Megaways feature: newer games, like Moriarty Megaways, now have a Max Megaways element. Normally randomly triggered, the maximum number of symbols per reel will be displayed giving you the maximum number of ways to win on that spin.
Bonus Buy feature: this allows you to buy your way into the main bonus feature (the Free Spins feature) for a set price (normally 100 or 200 times your stake). Big Time Gaming’s White Rabbit slot was the first to use this. Some Megaways slots see the price drop when you see special coins appear on the reels. If the Bonus Buy balance reaches zero, the feature is played automatically. This isn’t available in the UK though to the UK Gambling commission’s regulations.
Megaways All Action Slots
In some territories, like the UK, bonus buy slots are prohibited. This allows players to buy their way into the main bonus feature, normally the free spins, for a certain stake (i.e. 50 x your total stake). A way around this is by playing Megaways All Action slots.
All Action Megaways slots remove the base game leaving just the Free Spins feature. Coined by Blueprint Gaming, you have Diamond Mine All Action Megaways and Buffalo Rising All Action Megaways.
With the All Action mechanic available on these 2 games only, you can play the free spins feature for a minimum of £20. You go straight into the free spins allowing for players with deeper pockets to go straight into the action.
Megaways Slots Summary
The popular mechanic has certainly taken the industry by storm. The ever-changing number of reels, ways to win and more and more bonus features being thrown in make for an exciting combination. With the risk of too many Megaways slots online being available, more innovations are required to take this revolutionary phenomenon to the next level.
As a result, creator Big Time Gaming has created other engines/mechanics which are beginning to gain popularity. You will see more slot games use them in 2021 including ones from other providers. Check out our Megaclusters and Megaquads pages for more information.
Other slot developers, like ELK Studios and NextGen Gaming have developed similar concepts. The good thing is that this brings innovation and pushes the boundaries for online slots in general.
Megaways slots are games using the Megaways mechanic which was created by slot provider Big Time Gaming. It allows for a random number reel modifier that changes how many symbols appear on each of the reels. The more symbols per reel, the more Megaways and potential way to form winning combinations. Read the What is Megaways? section for more details on how it works.
If you take a 6 reel, 117,649 Megaways slot, it can contain between 2 and 7 symbols on every reel. If all reels display 2 symbols each, there’s 324 Megaways in play. If all reels contain 7 symbols each, the number of Megaways increases to 117,649. The number of symbols and paylines is randomly determined on each spin. Traditional online slots have a fixed number of paylines or ways to win on every spin.
The good news is that Megaways slots can be found at most online casinos (due to its success) and we only expect this section to grow substantially. All reputable and trusted casinos will offer Megaways games.
Yes – Megaways free play slots are available here at Online-Slot.co.uk where you can try before going on to play real money. This allows you to try the revolutionary mechanic and familiarise yourself with how Megaways slots work. Check out the full list of Megaways slots to read reviews and play in demo mode.
Max Megaways is a relatively new feature where you’ll get a spin with the maximum number of ways to win possible in play. You’ll get a spin with the maximum number of symbols on each reel. Newer Megaways games like Moriarty Megaways offer this.
The first game to use the Megaways mechanic was Dragon Born Megaways from Big Time Gaming. It was Bonanza Megaways though that put Megaways on the map.
