The theme for Ahoy Royale is obvious from the start. It’s a pirate game, and everything that appears on the reels sticks to the theme. Iron Dog Studio has put a lot of effort into the symbols, from the rum to the parrots, and they are bright, colourful, and help to set the scene right away. You play on a backdrop of a treasure map, and as it’s the same colour as parchment, it helps the reels to stand out. I really like the visuals here; they’re slightly cartoony, but it doesn’t take away from the game.
The sounds are just as good at Ahoy Royale casinos. It plays an upbeat tune that could be a pirate song. It sets the scene and creates an excellent atmosphere for the game. You can also land special symbols that can impact the reels. The upgrade symbol randomly increases the value of one of the coins on the reels every spin. The extra spin symbol increases the maximum number of respins to 4.
The round continues until you fill the reels or run out of respins. At the end of the round, it collects the value of all coins and the collect symbols.

Ahoy Royale Verdict: Gameplay Lets this Game Down
I wanted to enjoy Ahoy Royale as the theme caught my eye from the start. It looks fantastic, and the music is a real highlight. There are lots of pirate games on the market, so it needs to be good to stand out. The maximum payout is also decent, as 7,500x the stake is above the standard 5,000x that lots of slots aim for now.
Unfortunately, the gameplay is the real sticking point here. It’s not particularly innovative, as I’ve seen all of these features before. With only 10 paylines, it can be a grind to play, too. This could have been a much better game, but it needs improved gameplay and more paylines for it to fit in with the best slots.
