The Reel Star slot is played over 5 reels and 15 fixed paylines. The layout, therefore, is pretty traditional as is the way the slot pays out. Winning combinations are created from left to right along a payline, starting from the leftmost reel.

Relax Gaming describe Reel Star as a slot with a ‘classic retro style, with a modern twist’. Whilst that’s a fair interpretation, we’re not sure it does justice to how fun the slot can feel. In our view, the theme is somewhere between 1980’s and Saturday night prime time TV.
The lights behind the reels make us feel like we’re on an ITV program. Imagine the staging of X-Factor, Take Me Out, or Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway. The upbeat soundtrack is fitting, sounding like a cross between The Human League and the intro music to one of the shows we’ve just mentioned. All in all, the design of the slot really raises the vibes and we found it quite enjoyable.
There are six regular symbols on the reels, including bells, horseshoes, four-leafed clovers, pink gems and crowns. The piggy bank is the highest paying symbol, giving you up to 15 x your stake for a five-of-a-kind combination.

Star Symbols Feature
In the base game, Star symbols can land on any reel on any spin. These symbols carry a multiplier, the size of which depends on how many stars land on the reels at one time. Landing 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 Stars gives you 1x, 3x, 15x, 50x, or 250x your stake.
When a star lands, you’ll see the relative multiplier value light up to the left of the reels. Whilst this is nice, we’re a little disappointed that Reel Star doesn’t also boast a tumble feature. Without one, you can’t bank or rack up more stars from subsequent spins. This means your hopes of achieving high multiplier amounts are pinned entirely on how many stars land initially.
Upgrader Feature
The Upgrader feature helps to make up for the lack of tumbles. Upgrader symbols can also land anywhere on the reels, and each Upgrader symbol doubles the multiplier value of each Star symbol. So, for instance, if you landed 2 Star symbols and an Upgrader symbol, you’d receive a multiplier of 6 x your stake.
On each reel, at least one Star symbol is positioned next to an Upgrader symbol. This means it’s possible to land 5 Star symbols (worth 250 x your stake), and 5 Upgrader symbols at the same time. This would then give you the max payout of 8,000 x your stake (250 x multiplier, doubled 5 times).
Free Spins Feature
In the base game, Free Spins scatters can land on reels 2, 3 and 4. Landing 3 scatters triggers the Free Spins feature.
Each Free Spins round starts with a certain amount of free spins, a certain multiplier, and a certain number of moving wilds. Whilst the Reel Star slot is relatively basic, we still had a good amount of fun spinning the reels. The graphics are great and the upbeat feel keeps you going. That said, we know the simple mechanisms and bonus features won’t impress everyone, especially those who enjoy Relax Gaming’s more intense releases like Money Train 3.
When it comes to the gameplay, we were happy to see that you can achieve the biggest wins through the base game. Usually, slots providers save the max payouts for free spins or other bonus rounds, which can be a little infuriating. Instead, landing 5 Star symbols and 5 Upgrader symbols in the base game gives you the slot’s 8,000 x stake max wins.
