The Cool Bananas™ slot uses a 5-reel and 3-row layout. It’s typical of casino slots online, and the 25 paylines are around the average. However, it’s well below what modern Megaways slots offer. You need at least 3 matching symbols on a payline to create a win, but the highest value symbols only need 2.

You can start betting in the Cool Bananas™ slot game with 25p per spin. It goes up to £250 per spin, which is enticing for high rollers. It’s one of the highest top wagers for new slots, so it’s a solid option. Remember that in the UK, you can only bet up to £5. Stake and spin controls are on the right of the reels, although the stake control is slightly hidden. If you’re playing at a UK online casino, you can’t access the autoplay in the settings.

Although you won’t need to check slot sites, the Cool Bananas™ RTP is pretty low at 95.05%. It’s nowhere near the best RTP slots, so it’s not appealing from this angle. While researching my Cool Bananas™ review, I found a medium volatility, which felt about right from spinning the reels.

I’m not completely sold on the Cool Bananas™ max win. It’s widely reported at 21,840x the stake, but many outlets also fail to understand the paytable. I have seen people report the wild to pay out 5,000x the stake, when it is actually 5,000 coins, which works out at 200x the stake. Despite this, with up to 80 Free Spins available, it is theoretically possible to hit that payout, just improbable.

Cool Bananas™ Theme—A Fun Idea That’s Aged Poorly

I think NextGen Gaming had a great idea with Cool Bananas™. King Kong in a modern setting, acting cool, is a fun idea for a theme. And for the time, they implemented it quite well. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look as fresh a decade down the line. Although the graphics are limited, they are colourful and clear, and the animations are rudimentary.

It’s a similar tale when you load the sounds at Cool Bananas™ casinos. They’re not bad, but they are a product of their time. They’re extremely generic and don’t add much to the atmosphere. This was likely a great theme in 2011, but now it is really showing its age.

Cool Bananas™ Mobile Slot

The Cool Bananas™ mobile slot is a newer addition, as it was originally a Flash game. The controls are simple enough to use, but the way the stake button spreads out is awkward on a touchscreen.

There isn’t a mobile casino version that supports portrait gameplay. The game even says this game is optimised for landscape only. So, if you want to play, landscape is the way forward.

There are only 2 Cool Bananas™ bonus features, and they don’t give much excitement to the game.

Wild Multiplier

Any win that includes the wild symbol also gets doubled. It doesn’t count for wild wins, only the other standard symbols. The wild multipliers don’t stack, so whether it’s 1 or 4 wilds, the multiplier is still just 2.

Free Spins

If you land at least 3 scatter symbols on the reels, it awards the Free Spins. You get 8 spins per scatter, so the minimum amount you can start with is 24, and the maximum is 40. You can retrigger the round once while playing, for a total of 80 spins. During the Free Spins, all wins are doubled, which does stack with the wild multiplier.

Cool Bananas is a game that hasn’t aged well, diminishing what was once an enjoyable slot. The wild multipliers are a nice touch, though.

What we liked

• Wilds double the value of wins
• Up to 80 Free Spins available
• Theoretical max win of over 20,000x the stake

What we didn't

• Unlikely to get close to the higher wins

A 21,840x the stake max win sounds appealing, but it’s almost impossible to get near. You’d need to trigger all 80 Free Spins and hit 5 wilds on every single spin. Even the most optimistic slot player has to admit that it probably won’t happen.

Other than that, the gameplay is below par. While the wild multipliers are solid, they’re not enough to make this an exciting game. Cool Bananas™ is a slot from the past, and it probably should have stayed there.
