Collapsing Mine feature

When you starting playing Misery Mining, you will notice a 7×7 game area with the central 3×3 area open. The other positions are blocked off by barriers. With 27 ways to win, exploding xBomb symbols next to a barrier move the barrier 1 step, increasing the play area and number of ways to win. Exploding an xBomb in the centre position moves all barriers 1 step.

The Collapsing Mine feature comes into play with you land a winning combination, an xBomb explosion doesn’t give you a win and less than 3 scatters appear. The latter outcome will see the scatters transform into non-wild xBombs and trigger xBomb explosions as outlined above. The collapses continue until no new wins are formed.

xBomb Wild Multiplier feature

The xBomb Wild symbol substitutes for all symbols bar the scatter and Super Scatter symbols. An exploding xBomb wild removes adjacent paying symbols and increases the win multiplier by 1 for your next collapse. This is known as the xBomb Wild Multiplier feature. When I refer to paying symbols, it doesn’t include scatter, Super Scatter and other xBombs symbols.

Furthermore, any adjacent barriers move 1 step away from the xBomb wild. If it appears on the centre position, all barriers move 1 step away. This can increase the real area to 7×7 in size with 823,543 ways to win. With all xBombs exploding before your next collapse, an xBomb wild explodes when there’s no win. It will also explode and award a new collapse if no win is formed.

xBomb Mining feature

If no wins or xBomb wilds appear, remaining scatters and/or Super Scatters transform into non-wild xBombs that explode. This triggers a new collapse and moves barriers accordingly as well as increasing the multiplier by 1. This is known as the xBomb Mining feature.

Misery Free Spins feature

The Misery Free Spins feature can be triggered in a number of ways, involving scatters and/or Super Scatters. You then have to pick from 2 modes: Mouse Mode or Rat Mode. Choosing Mouse Mode will give you 8, 10 or 12 free spins depending on how you activated the feature. Rat Mode gives you 3 free spins:

Mouse Mode is a high volatility option with Rat Mode being in the extreme bracket. In Mouse Mode, a Super Scatter can be triggered if less than 2 Super Scatters are active. This gives you an extra 2 free spins. In Rat Mode, activating coin wagons or Super Scatters will reset the number of free spins to 3.

Look out for the Top Row which reveals enhancers on each free spin. An enhancer is activated when a scatter or Super Scatter lands on the reel below the enhancer except for Rat. Super Scatters contain multipliers that affect all enhancers activated by this symbol. Furthermore, enhancers can be used multiple times in a single free spin by landing several scatters on the same reel. Here’s what the enhancers do:

Coin Wagon	the value of the coin wagon is added to scatters/Super Scatters and any side collectors closet to it and updates the total win. They also reset the number of free spins to 3 in Rat Mode. Wagons with a 1 x stake prize will contain a wagon fill of poo. It’s a nice little touch.
Multiplier	this increases the multiplier on the Super Scatter for the rest of the feature. The multiplier value is added to the current multiplier on the Super Scatter which multiply any values collected by enhanced activated by the scatter.
Bomb	bombs drop down to the activating Scatter and opens up 8 adjacent positions. If activated in the centre position, the bomb explodes all positions except the side and bottom collectors.
Bag	collects values held by Scatters and side collectors on the corresponding row. This updates the total win and adds this value to the Scatter that activated the enhancer.
Chest	collects all scatter and open side collector values within a distance of 3 reels and then updates the total win amount.
Dwarf	he sticks on the lowest triggering scatter and collects values in the reel area and open side collectors within a distance of 3 reels for all future free spins. If the Dwarf is stuck on a Super Scatter, it also collects multipliers.
Rat	appearing on enhancer reels 1 and 7, the Rat walks down over the collectors on that reel and adds all the values is walks by and opens an unopened collector.
Super Scatter	appearing on enhancer reels 2 and 6, it jumps to a random position on the reel area. In Mouse Mode, it adds 2 more free spins whilst it rests the number of free spins to 3 in Rat Mode.

Now, you have Side Collectors which are activated by the Bomb and Rat enhancers. It can then interact with Dwarf, Bag and Chest enhancers. When inactive, it can only interact with Coin Wagons. When activated, the value on it is added to the total win.

Finally, Bottom Collectors are activated by Bombs or by the Rat enhancer on reels 1 and 7. When in play, it collects all values held by scatters or Side Collectors on the same reel for every free spin. When activated, all values are added to the total win amount.

Where do I begin?! Whilst there’s been no confirmation from Nolimit City, the Misery Mining slot is a follow-up/sequel of sorts to Fire in the Hole. With a more sinister look graphically, you’ll be instant greeted with a unique play area that begins on a 3×3 grid with 27 paylines.

It blows the Megaways mechanic out of the water in the way the play area can expand outwards up to 7×7 in size with up to 823,543 ways to win. The key to this is from xBomb Wilds which also increase the win multiplier by 1 with each collapse/cascade. It reminds me a little of Relax Gaming’s Space Miners in the way blockers can destroyed in various directions.

Focusing on the Misery Free Spins feature, you need to choose between the high volatility Mouse Mode or the extremely volatile Rat Mode. I found the Rat Mode to be the better option as you can benefit from more frequent retriggers.

The key is to bring in the Side and Bottom Collectors which in turn bring in the other enhancers. For that you need Bomb or Rat enhancers to work their magic. Then hope you land the Dwarf enhancer which collects prizes within a distance of 3 reels for all remaining free spins. One thing is for certain, you will need to play the Misery Mining demo version quite a few times to get your head around it all.

Looking at the numbers provided by Nolimit City, the 70,000 x stake max win can be achieved in the base game as well as the 2 modes. The max win is much more achieved in the free spins though with the Rat Mode proving to be the more fruitful:

Whilst Fire in the Hole is 1 of my favourite ever online slots, the Misery Mining slot takes it up a level with a new mechanic in the base game and much more layers of complexity in the free spins. Whilst the feature reminds me of the Money Cart Bonus feature from Money Train 2 (by Relax Gaming), there’s so much more on offer here.

In summary, Nolimit City keep delivering knockout titles with no end to their innovation. It’s a must-play slot in my opinion. I love the fact NLC keeps us guessing with every new release. Though not as controversial as Tombstone RIP, the gameplay will keep you digging deeper in the mine shaft on the dwarf’s quest for liquid gold.
