Downtown Abbey Theme/Symbols
This is a cartoon version of the iconic Downtown Abbey TV show. With the stately home in the background, you’ll see a selection of plates, cups, eggs, dishes, dogs as well as 12 different character symbols. When a winner is created, you’ll see a brief clip from the show. The action here takes place on 2 sets of reels. The bottom set of reels is open at all times and offers 40 paylines. The second set is locked.
Upstairs Downstairs feature
To open it, you need to land the bell in the top position on the middle reel. This unlocks the top set which offers 243 ways to win. If a wild lands on the bottom set when the reels are open, it is copied onto the same position in the top set. The best standard symbols are Carson (Jim Carter) and Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville). They both award 0.1, 0.3 or 1 x stake if you land 3, 4 or 5 in combination.
Call to Service feature
The Call to Service feature is triggered by landing the bell symbol anywhere on reel 3 on the bottom set of reels. Between 1 and 10 Downton Abbey wild symbols are added to random positions and a payout calculation follows.
Downtown Village Flower Show feature
5 red rose scatters across any active reels (both bottom and top) trigger the Downtown Village Flower Show feature. Choose from the 30 objects to reveal prizes of up to 50 x stake or 1 of the 3 jackpot prizes. Land 2 matching Duty Calls, Reels of Wealth or Manor on the Move symbols to trigger the associated free spins round.
Duty Calls Free Games feature
Trigger the Duty Calls Free Games feature via the Flower Show and you’ll receive 10 free spins. You can also land the round by hitting 10 or more of the associated scatter. This awards between 10 and 28 free spins. The Call to Service feature is active in this round and you can re-trigger more free spins too.
Reels of Wealth Free Games feature
Here 10 free spins are awarded. On any of them you could see any or all of reels 1, 2, 4 and 5 turn wild. The other features can trigger from within this bonus. Re-triggers are possible too.
Manor on the Move Free Games feature
Trigger this and you’ll receive 10 free spins. Any wild symbol that lands turns into a sticky roaming wild. This shifts to a different position with each free spin. It’s possible to open up the second set of reels here as well as benefit from the extra wilds on offer from the Call to Service feature. Re-triggers are possible too.
Downtown Abbey thoughts
Considering this is a slot based on a hugely popular but rather middle of the road drama, there are a few surprises in this version of Downton Abbey. The first is the rather complicated split-screen gameplay. The second is the variance which is incredibly high. Neither are what we expected to find in such a high-profile adaptation. The features aren’t bad but they can take a little getting used to. If you get the chance to play in demo mode, we suggest that you take it.
Design-wise, it’s okay without being quite as glossy as you might expect given the source material. With an RTP of just 90%, it’s not appealing – the max win is a mere 300 times your stake per spin or free spin. The bigger wins will come from the 3 progressive jackpots. We weren’t bowled over by Downton Abbey for a few reasons – the minimum stake is also £1 per spin which is high. If you’re a fan of the TV drama, it’s worth a look though.
I recommend you try Skywind’s The Last Kingdom which is based on the popular viking television series – also offering progressive jackpots, there’s also 2 free spins features with wild multipliers up to 5x and potential wins of 2,500 x stake per free spin.
