We’ve not always enjoyed the look of Ainsworth’s slots but the first impressions on firing up Sun Chief are pretty positive. A ruined temple forms the backdrop to the reels which include lower value playing cards as well as a toucan, a llama, a big cat and an eagle. The best of the standard symbols is the temple which awards 50, 100 or 750 coins if you land 3, 4 or 5 in a row.

They’re joined by the Sun Chief who is the game’s wild – he doesn’t offer any payouts but does replace all other symbols bar the scatter. The wild can land fully stacked on reels 3, 4 and 5 during the base game.

The main attraction in Sun Chief is the Free Games feature which is triggered by landing 3, 4 or 5 of the Sun Stone scatter. As well as a payout of 1, 5 or 50 times your total stake, you will also receive 8 free spins. The game engine is a little different during the feature as the payouts from the standard symbols are substantially reduced.

More positive is the addition of extra multiplier wilds on reel 3. When it lands, it is held in place, complete with a 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x multiplier for the next 4 free spins. When it reaches the 5x multiplier, it will be locked in place for any free spins you have remaining.

Land the standard Sun Chief wild during the feature, and it is held for the 3 following free spins. Re-triggers are possible here too – land the scatter on reels 2 and 4 on the same spin and 5 extra free spins will be added to your total.

Sun Chief is a simple, well-designed gam as the visuals are a step up from many slots in the Ainsworth catalogue. The stacked wilds offer potential in the base game, with the multipliers doing much the same in the feature. The amended paytable means you’re unlikely to break the bank during the feature. The wild multipliers can certainly help things along when you do land the bonus, though.

Ainsworth has made a decent stab of the Aztec genre in Sun Chief. It’s not especially innovative, but the better-than-usual design and free spins make it worth a look. If you like the theme, I recommend Pragmatic’s Fortune of Aztec.
