The design in Reel Heist is nicely done and has a cartoon caper feel – the reels are set against a US street scene. Joining the lower value A to 10 symbols are sunglasses which pay up to 14 times your stake per payline, handcuffs which award up to 19 times your stake and the cop’s hat which offers up to 29 times your stake. The best of the standard symbols is the police badge – land 3, 4 or 5 of the on a payline and you’ll pocket 4, 11 or 50 times your stake.
The cop, who seems to have been modelled on a member of the Village People, is the game’s wild – he doesn’t offer any payouts in his own right but does replace all other symbols. When the cop lands, he moves about position to position until he drops off the reels. The cop is also central to the game’s only feature.
At any time, 1 of 5 robbers can enter the reels to trigger the Robbers feature – when a robber does, the wild cop will chase him. A game of cat and mouse follows with the robber and cop each moving 1 symbol position at a time. The cop can chuck his baton and try and stun the robber, allowing him to get closer.
If the cop lands on the same position as the robber, you’ll get a catch. You’ll then receive the multiplier prize associated with each robber. These offer awards of up to 32, 64, 80, 128 or 2,000 times your stake. It’s possible for the cop to catch multiple robbers in 1 go which can lead to some potentially impressive rewards.
Reel Heist is an unorthodox game. Design-wise it’s rather good – the cartoon visuals work well and there’s a frantic backing track playing as you spin. The only bonus round on offer is the chase – if you’re after free spins or other goodies, look elsewhere.
We found Reel Heist to be a volatile affair, enduring lengthy spells where very little happened. If the cop makes an arrest of 1 of the higher value robbers, you can win a big amount quickly though. Expect some big swings here.
Reel Heist offers a very different take on the cops ‘n’ robbers theme. It looks and sounds good but we found it a little frustrating. We got close to the catch many times but only rarely did the bumbling cop make the arrest. If you fancy something a little different, then this is certainly worth a look though. Alternatively, Novomatic’s Cops ‘n’ Robbers is recommended.
