It might look like a random beach at first, but to me, it felt more like a hidden pirate cove—one of those spots you’d only stumble across with the right map in hand.

I love the way the animations tie everything together, too, with the water glistening, the torches flickering, and an occasional bird flying by. Plus, the soundscape is very upbeat. While it might get a bit repetitive after a while, the reel spins and win effects both do a pretty great job of breaking it up.

When it comes to the pay symbols, they’re super detailed and very high in quality. You’ll see them split into 2 groups. The lower-paying ones are the usual 10–A card royals, while those that pay higher stick to the pirate theme with a parrot, ship’s wheel, rum barrel, treasure map, and anchor.

Raise the Sails might come across as simple at first—and truth be told, it kind of is. The theme is playful, and the graphics are bright and colourful. The soundtrack is upbeat, and the animations have a fun, light feel. However, there’s definitely more going on under the surface. I’m talking about the jackpot potential, which isn’t something you run into often. Moreover, it totally flips the traditional free spins game with the potential of having the reels expand up to 3,125 ways to win.

That twist alone gives you a lot to work toward, and something I picked up on is that this one isn’t quite built for rapid-fire wins. It’s actually rather designed to build momentum. Take the Collect system, for example. It only banks Pearls when the Collect symbol lands on reel 5. That kept the tension up for me, but it’s also what made the wins feel pretty unpredictable.
