The Lava Lava slot game has 5 reels, 3 rows and 15 fixed paylines. To win, you need 3 or more matching symbols from left to right across any of the 15 paylines. The wins need to begin on the leftmost reel (i.e. reel 1).

Stakes are standard for a Thunderkick slot and range from 10p to £100 per spin. There’s a Casino Chip icon which will bring up all available bet options. If you’re not from the UK, you can use the Auto Play facility which allows up to 5,000 auto spins.

Theme – enter the volcano goddess’ realm

With a Hawaiian mythology theme, the Lava Lava slot is based on deity Pele, the goddess of volcanoes and creator of the Hawaiian islands. With volcanoes in the backdrop, the graphics are vivid and high definition.

Symbols include A, K, Q, J, 10 and 9 royals. You then have 3 Tiki masks (green, blue and purple) as well as a gold flower. The gold flower pays the most with 3, 4 or 5 paying 5, 10 or 30 x your total stake respectively.

Then you have the lava wild symbol which substitutes for all symbols above. 1 or more wilds as part of a win will apply a multiplier up to 32x (more details below). The volcano goddess symbol is the scatter and is key to playing the free spins.

Lava Lava Bonus Features

The Lava Lava slot has 3 bonus features. There are avalanches for successive wins and multipliers up to 32x when lava wilds are part of a win. These both apply during the free spins where up to 3 lava wilds are added per free spin.

Avalanche feature

When you get a winning combination, the Avalanche feature is triggered. Winning symbols are simply replaced with new and/or existing symbols dropping from above. This can lead to another win. The avalanches continue as long as there’s a new win.

Wild Multiplier feature

When a lava wild symbol is part of a win, the Wild Multiplier feature kicks in. The multiplier value depends on the number of wilds that are part of the winning combination. The multiplier ranges from 2x up to 32x:

Bonus Game feature

The Bonus Game feature is triggered in an unconventional manner. When a volcano goddess scatter lands, the scatter explodes and removes all other symbols vertically and horizontally (except wilds or scatters). Scatters are then collected in the Bonus Meter and the Avalanche feature is activated.

If you collect 3 scatters, the Bonus Game feature will be played with 10 free spins awarded. You can do this during the feature but 5 additional free spins are won.

Prior to each free spin, 1 to 3 lava wilds are randomly placed on the reels. Every wild have 3 lives protecting it from exploding during an avalanche. If you get a win with a wild, it loses 1 life. The wild disappears when all lives have been used. Remember that a win will a wild will apply a multiplier, up to 32x.

Lava Lava Review Summary – familiar gameplay

Theme wise, the Lava Lava slot looks great with the erupting volcanoes providing a visual treat. However, on closer inspection, it’s very similar to the sci-fi/Egyptian themed Pyramyth slot.

With same number of reels and paylines, wins including a wild will see a multiplier up to 32x applied. The free spins is a little different with more free spins potentially on offer in Pyramyth but Lava Lava comes with random lava wilds that have 3 lives each.

This in turn increases your potential of benefitting from multipliers up to 32x. This is where the 10,000 x stake max wins will surely be won. 32x multipliers and random wilds also feature in Thunderkick’s Midas Golden Touch. It does come marginally higher max wins of 10,100 x stake.

All in all, this trip to Hawaii is a decent one but it’s a cloned effort on most fronts. Whilst the visuals may appeal to some, there’s not enough to make Lava Lava stand out on its own unfortunately.
