The Flying Hippo slot is played on a 7×7 grid and uses the cluster pays mechanic. All symbols pay in blocks of 5 symbols or more connected vertically or horizontally. Just like most grid slots, winning combinations are paid and then disappear from the grid. The remaining symbols will then fall to the bottom, with new ones coming from above. Theme – fly high into the sky
The theme in the Flying Hippo slot game is difficult to pin down. There’s a hippo of course, and the action takes place in the night sky, but I can’t say what the overall theme is for certain. It reminds me a little of the Care Bears, who lived in a faraway place up in the clouds. The visuals are quite cartoony, which gives off a relaxing and easy-going feel. And it is just that, easy-going and simple to understand.
The audio is pretty basic, and I have to admit I was reaching for the mute button after a short while as it’s very repetitive, although rocky in parts. There is a futuristic feel to it when winning symbols explode and disappear from the reels, but I wasn’t blown away by the visuals or the soundtrack in all honesty.
On the reels, the A-J Royals make up the lower-paying symbols. These are joined by higher-paying stars and a hippo symbol. The hippo pays the most, awarding 0.75 x your stake for 5-6 in combination up to 50 x your stake for 25+.

There’s just 1 main bonus feature in the Flying Hippo slot, which is a Spawning Wild feature. This can lead to colossal symbols and some big multipliers. Read on as we explain how it all works.
Spawning Wild feature
When a winning cluster forms and then explodes, a Wild symbol is left behind randomly in one of the empty spots. You will see a meter to the left of the reels, and this can award multipliers to the Wilds if you’re at a certain level.
When a Wild is part of a win, it’s collected in the meter, and every 6 Wilds will increase the level of the spin – first to level 1, then 2, then 3. Before you hit level 1, Wilds will appear either without a multiplier or with a random 2x multiplier attached. Here are the multipliers that are available at each level:

With me so far? Good. It’s all fairly straightforward. The only other thing to note is if a Colossal Wild overlaps an existing Wild on the grid, the multiplier of the smaller Wild is added to that of the Colossal Wild. Multipliers will also apply to the win of all clusters if the same Wilds are part of 1 or more clusters.
Flying Hippo Review Summary – a bit too simple
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first loaded the Flying Hippo slot game. I’m not sure Pragmatic Play really nailed down the theme here as I still can’t pinpoint what it is. Dare I say they may have rushed this one? Perhaps. The bonus features are lacking, the volatility is super high and the RTP rate is disappointingly low at 93.99%.
Any good points? The 5,000 x max win potential is pretty good. But that’s as good as it gets. You might like this kind of theme, and if you do, then you’ll no doubt enjoy this one. I wasn’t a fan personally, but at least the max win is high enough to keep players interested for a while. That is ultimately what has stopped my rating from being one of the worst I’ve ever given. Saved by the max win.
