Visually, Banana Odyssey is decent – you are taken to space but it has a punchy art style to it. Symbols on the reels include the standard A, K, Q and J card suits – you’ll also see a Banana Blaster (weapon) and Astro Nuts (food). The other 2 symbols are rival Astrochimps Buck and Chip.
They are also the most rewarding symbols giving you 1.2, 3 and 10 times your stake for 3, 4 or 5 on a payline. You’ll also notice the funky soundtrack which is rather good I must say. To form winning combinations, you can do so by getting matching symbols on a payline starting from both reels 1 and 5 – meaning it’s a win both ways slot and doubles your chances of winning basically.
Banana Planet is the wild symbol and appears on the 3 middle reels only (reels 2, 3 and 4) – it replaces all symbols bar the scatter. When a Banana Planet wild appears on any of the 3 middle reels, the Expanding Wilds feature comes into play – the wild symbol then transforms into a wild reel.
Further, the wild reel is then held in place with a free respin to follow – this is called the Respin feature. If another wild appears, it too will expand (to give you a wild reel) when it then held with a further respin awarded. You can get up to 3 respins (for 3 wild reels) in total.
Banana Odyssey also benefits from a Free Spins feature – this is played when you get a Free Spins scatter symbol simultaneously on reels 2, 3 and 4. You will then get 10 free spins. Any Banana Planet wild landing will also expand (like in the base game) – however, the wild reel remains locked in position throughout the feature. The only negative is that you can retrigger the feature meaning no more free spins.
Banana Odyssey is a decent slot from Microgaming – it’s high-action and looks good in my opinion (especially the beautiful lighting effects when you win). I do like expanding wilds but variance wise it’s in the middle. If you were to fill the reels with 1 of 2 Astrochimps, you’d win 400 times your stake which is adequate yet not inspiring.
I like the Astrochimp theme but it’s quite like NetEnt’s Starburst in terms of functionality. If you want a slot that takes you on a high volatile intergalactic mission, Crystal Sun by Play ‘N Go is my recommendation – it has expanding wilds and re-spins but with multipliers that combine for wins of 4,000 times your stake on each of them.
