The Astro Cat™ slot layout is one of the most innovative I’ve seen in years of online slots reviewing. It uses a 3-3-4×4-3-3 layout. The middle reel is actually 16 individual spaces, with each one able to be activated only once. It blew me away when I started my Astro Cat™ review. You have access to 1,296 paylines, similar to Megaways slots, and 3 matching symbols create a win. Ignore anyone who says this game has 8 reels; it is a 5-reel game.

You can stake between 50p and £500 in the Astro Cat™ slot game. I think it’s above the lowest stakes for most new slots, which could put off beginner players. However, the maximum stake is among what the best slots offer, so it should appeal to high rollers. All controls are on the right of the screen, and as long as you’re not using a UK online casino, you can set up an autoplay.

The Astro Cat™ RTPis 95.44%, so it sits below the market average. There are some positives, though, as it doesn’t have RTP ranges. It means you can pick any UK online casino to play at, and the rate will be the same. It has a medium volatility, which was around what I suspected while playing the Astro Cat™ demo.

There’s an Astro Cat™ max win of up to 5,000x your stake. However, it’s only possible during the bonus round if you manage to fill the middle reel with wilds. I like how Lightning Box has set out the theme for Astro Cat™. It takes a lot of influence from Asian culture, with the anime-inspired design of the cat a big part of how everything looks. You’ll instantly be drawn in by the colourful designs and vibrant symbols.

The sounds are interesting at Astro Cat™ casinos. It uses a traditional Asian soundtrack, which fits well with the rest of the theme. On the whole, it’s a solid theme that works well.

Astro Cat™ Mobile Slot

In the Astro Cat™ mobile slot, you get a decent experience. It retains the layout of the desktop version, so there are no barriers between platforms. The graphics are just as colourful on smaller screens, and it keeps all the energy of the theme. You don’t lose any sound quality, either.

It works much better in landscape mode, as the giant middle reel takes up a lot of room. In portrait, you don’t get the full mobile casino experience.

Astro Cat™ Bonus Features

The middle reel drives all Astro Cat™ bonus features, with everything contained in the Free Spins round. 

Free Spins

If you manage to land at least 5 bonus symbols on the middle reel, it triggers the Free Spins round. During this round, the 12 outside spaces on the middle reel can only show wilds or poison bottles. If you land a wild on the outside, you get another spin. Landing a poison bottle will award a 2x your stake payout and end the round.

If you fill the 12 positions, you get a final 13th spin, with the entire middle reel turned wild. You need to make it to the final spin to have a chance of winning the maximum payout.

I think if Astro Cat™ had some extra base game features and a higher maximum win, it would have been a classic along the lines of Starburst and Gonzo’s Quest. Instead, Lightning Box took their highly innovative idea and thought that it would be enough of a selling point.

It’s a shame, because the middle reel is a truly great idea. It tries something different, and this is a unique slot as a result. However, it’s missing too much for it to be a must-play game. If you want to try something different, this is well worth a few spins. It probably won’t match up to what some more modern games offer, though.
