Theme: turn up the heat

The theme is very much a mixture of fire, jokers and money. Let’s call it a money-themed slot as there are more money-related items on the reels than fire or jokers. The reels are set on a stage, which does resemble a gameshow stage but I can’t be certain. There’s a joker to the right of the reels as you spin away and the reels themselves look like some sort of vault, which, again, could be another nod towards the money theme.

The symbols are bold and really stand out with the red background. The soundtrack is ok. It’s quite disco-like but very generic. Land the Free Spins feature and the audio speeds up to resemble a level from Sonic the Hedgehog. You know what I mean if you’ve played it. It has that old 80s video game sound. The background changes from purple to red to mix things up a little, but it’s all fairly standard stuff.

On the reels, the A-10 Royals make up the lower-paying symbols. These are joined by higher-paying symbols related to money – rings with a dollar sign on, stacks of cash and chips, chests of gold bars, lucky 7s and diamonds. The diamond symbol is the most lucrative, paying 0.75, 1.5, 2.5 or 5 x the bet for 3, 4, 5 or 6 in combination.

The game’s Wild is a flame, which appears on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 only. The Scatter is a fiery crown and will only appear in the base game.

Expanding Wild

When a Wild lands on the reels, more Wilds will be added vertically, above the original one, up to the end of the screen. When it fully expands, a multiplier appears on top of this stack that’s equal to the number of Wilds on that reel. This multiplier applies to all wins that pass through the Wilds. If more multipliers are on the reels at the same time, they multiply between themselves.

Free Spins feature

Land 4, 5 or 6 Scatters on the reels in the base game to trigger this bonus feature and get 15, 20 or 25 free spins respectively. It’ll play in the same way as the base game with one exception – all multipliers made by Expanding Wilds are double the amount of Wilds on each reel. It’s also worth noting here that the feature cannot be retriggered like other slots.

While the gameplay is fairly basic overall, the Expanding Wilds are the key to bigger wins, especially in the Free Spins feature. It would have been nice for the 1 in 369 average to be lower for the Free Spins feature to trigger, but, overall, it’s a fun game to play.

When I first loaded the Blazing Wilds Megaways slot game, I was expecting a fairly standard Megaways release and I wasn’t disappointed. It is fairly standard. The visuals and the audio won’t be winning any awards, and the Free Spins feature isn’t anything out of the ordinary. But there is one feature that stands out – the Expanding Wilds. They may well have taken inspiration from Hacksaw’s Beast Below slot, which seems expanding upwards wilds up to 200x there. So although it’s nothing we haven’t seen before, this feature really adds to the overall appeal of the slot.

When you add in the 10,000 x max wins and the above-average RTP rate of 96.06%, you’ve got a very good slot once you consider everything on offer. I wish there was another bonus feature as that would have put this slot in the same bracket as some of the greats in my opinion. As it is, it’s good but it doesn’t deserve a higher rating than I’ve given it.
