You have a birdseye view as the reels are set above a river, with greenery on either side of the 6×6 grid. There’s a spaceship at the very top of the reels, with the boosters from it blasting the symbols away on every spin.

The soundtrack sounds like you’re playing an 80s video game, and that intensifies when you trigger one of the bonus features. It’s as if you’ve moved onto another level of a video game as the bonus features feel like separate games in their own right. On the reels in the base game of the Space Donkey slot game, the A-9 Royals make up the lower-paying symbols. These are joined by 5 high-paying symbols – bullets, a gun, an alien head, a plane and a monkey. The monkey symbol is the most lucrative, paying 0.7, 1.25, 2 or 4 x your total stake for 3, 4, 5 or 6 in combination respectively.

The game’s Wild isn’t your standard Wild. It’s a spaceship called an Abduction Wild, and it appears in the main game on reels 2 to 6 only. Space Donkey Mobile

The Space Donkey mobile slot has been created using the latest HTML5 technology. This means it has been optimised for mobiles, tablets, laptops and PCs. Space Donkey Features

There are 5 bonus features in the Space Donkey slot game. From Choppers firing all over the reels to some superb Hid N’ Seek and Seek N’ Destroy bonus features, there’s a lot to understand. Read on as we take you through everything, starting with the Hellfire feature.

Hellfire feature

Chopper symbols can appear on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5. If 3 or more of these symbols land, you will trigger the Hellfire feature. The first Chopper will fire in 1 direction, the 2^nd Chopper will fire in 2 directions and so on. The Chopper’s multiplier will be added to all Wilds and normal paying symbols in the firing direction.

Hide N’ Seek feature

Land 3 Scatters in the base game of the Space Donkey slot to trigger this bonus feature. Scatters on the reels will convert to Traps in a 6×6 grid area where the edges of the area are connected to the opposing edges. It’s a completely different look to the base game and feels like you’re playing a retro video game.

Each turn will display 2 values – Direction and Steps. This makes the Monkey character move around collecting the chest values. The Monkey will stop moving once its life is taken, but he will start with 3 lives. The Monkey and the Alien will both lose a life when they encounter each other or walk into a Trap. Traps are only removed if the Monkey walks into it.

When the Monkey walks over a position, it will trigger or collect whatever the symbols hold in that position, Removed symbols will trigger a drop, allowing new symbols to drop onto the reels. But it’s worth noting that no new Trap symbols will ever drop.

We’ve mentioned that the Alien takes the life of the Monkey, and it will move one step toward the Monkey after the Monkey has moved. But here’s everything the Alien can do:

• Monkey reached – takes a life from the Monkey and disappears.
• Chest reached – adds the Chest multiplier to its value.
• Reaching Magician, King, Princess or Stone Monster – Adds 1x to its value.
• Reaching a Trap – the Alien dies, leaving a Golden Chest in its starting position. It then spreads its value equally to adjacent Golden Chests or retains its entire value.
• Killed by Princess or Stone Monster – same occurs as when it reaches a Trap.

Once the Alien has disappeared, it can respawn in coming avalanches, taking the value of the symbol it appears on.

Seek N’ Destroy feature

4 Scatters in the base game will trigger this bonus feature. Each additional Scatter will award an extra Monkey Shield. Again, this looks very different from the base game and feels like another video game level. Played on 5 rows and 6 columns, a random multiplier up to 10x will appear on top of columns 2 to 6. Aliens will move towards the Monkey on every turn as the Monkey jumps to a random row and fires a weapon to kill the Aliens.

On each turn, an Alien with a multiplier will come in from all horizontal launcher tubes (rows). Once it’s been killed, its value is multiplied by the column’s multiplier and then awarded. Aliens can have different amounts of life.

Booster symbols can also appear in the launcher tube and can award a Shield or a weapon upgrade. The feature ends when the Monkey runs out of lives or when Monkeypendence Day is triggered. More on that in a moment.

Here’s how each turn pans out:

• The monkey moves to a random row.
• Aliens and Booster symbols move 1 step to the left.
• Launcher tubes spawn a new wave of Aliens.
• A random weapon is chosen by the Monkey and fired straight ahead.
• Any Aliens killed will have their value awarded after being multiplied by the column multiplier.

The Monkey can fire different weapons, so let’s run you through each of them and what they do:

Starting from the top row, it’s important to note that the launcher tube has 3, 4, 5, 4 and 3 lives. Each fired weapon knocks a life from the launcher tube and from the Mothership. Once a launcher tube has been destroyed:

• 100 x bet is awarded for each launcher tube.
• Destroys all Aliens on adjacent rows and awards their values.
• Once destroyed, the launcher tube will not spawn Aliens.

Once you reach the left edge of the launcher tube on the same row as the Monkey, the Aliens will remove a life/shield from the Monkey. Boost symbols will award a Shield or a weapon upgrade. Make sense? Good. It’s a lot to take in, but once you start playing the bonus feature, it will all come together. It’s easy to understand to be honest even though it may sound complicated at first.

Monkeypendence Day

Ok, so I’ve mentioned the Mothership and Monkeypendence Day but what are they? The Mothership has 25 lives in total, and that decreases by one each time the launcher tube is shot. When all launcher tubes or the Mothership is destroyed, the bonus round will end and a random multiplier of 5x, 10x, 15x or 20x will be awarded. This is then multiplied by the accumulated bonus win. This is Monkeypendence Day!

Space Donkey Review Summary: retro delight

For those who love retro video games, you may well fall in love with the Space Donkey slot. It resembles the Capcom classic video game 1942, which has a birdseye view of the action. The background is very similar too.

It brings back memories of Thunderkick’s Flame Busters and Relax Gaming’s Hellcatraz, which is still a very popular slot to this day. They’ve since followed that up with Hellcatraz 2 Dream Drop, which was another one of the provider’s success stories. But the difference here is that the bonus features are almost like video games themselves. They’re fantastically unique.

When you add into the mix the solid RTP rate of 96.07% and the max win potential of 14,649 x the bet, you’ve got a brilliant slot on your hands. If the max win potential was higher and maybe the bonus feature frequency was lower than 1 in 298 spins, this may well have received top marks from me. Nevertheless, it’s still a superb game that will no doubt be loved by many.
