With a mining theme, the Fire in the Hole 2 slot looks great. The visuals are very similar to the original game, but with an obvious aesthetic upgrade as it’s been 3 years since the release of the first slot. Why change a winning formula? I love how it looks and the soundtrack that accompanies the gameplay.

Land the Lucky Wagon Spins feature and you’ll move deeper inside the mine, with the audio sounding more intense as you spin away in search of big wins. It does look a little like Yggdrasil’s Dwarf Mine slot and the main character reminds me of Russ Cook, a guy who ran the entire length of Africa for charity. It’s definitely the ginger beard.

Collapsing Mine feature

Each spin in the base game begins with just 3 active rows. For each collapse, an extra row becomes active up to a maximum of 6 rows.

A new collapse can be triggered by:

• Landing a winning combination
• An xBomb Wild explosion
• Triggering the Wild Mining feature

Winning symbols are paid and then removed from the reels before the next collapse begins. This makes all symbols fall to leave empty positions that are taken up by new symbols dropping in from above.

xBomb Wild Multilpier

Any xBomb Wild symbol that lands will substitute for any symbols except Bonus Scatters. It will remove adjacent symbols except Bonus Scatters and will increase the win multiplier by its value for the next collapse. All xBomb Wilds will explode before the next collapse apart from when the Wild Mining feature is triggered.

Wild Mining feature

This bonus feature will be triggered in the base game when 3, 4, 5 or 6 of the same kind of symbols align vertically or horizontally and there is no winning combination. The triggering symbols will be removed to create Wilds in the middle positions of the alignment:

Buried Features

You’ll come across symbols in the dirt in the base game. These may contain a Wild, Bonus Scatter or xSplit symbols. They remain inactive in the dirt until the block that are in is removed or hit by an xSplit feature.

xSplit Symbols

If you’ve played plenty of Nolimit City slots in the past, you’ll know how this popular feature works. An xSplit symbol will split symbols on its row, doubling them. Symbols splitting into 8 or more will be shown with a multiplier instead.

Once all xSplit symbols have been activated, they all turn into 1 of the regular paying symbols. Dirt blocks that are affected by a Split feature are removed if there is a collapse.

Lucky Wagon Spins feature

Land 3, 4 or 5 Bonus Scatters to trigger this bonus feature with 2, 3 or 4 active rows initially. You will start with 3 spins and that spin count will reset back to 3 each time a coin lands on the reels. All coin values are valued at times the active stake.

During the bonus round, the top row will reveal enhancers (otherwise known as modifiers). An enhancer is activated when a coin lands on the reel below the enhancer. Here’s a list of what’s available:

• Coin Value – sets the value of the coin
• Multipliers – Multiplies the value of all coins on the reel below the enhancer.
• Dynamite – Adds the dynamite count as times bet value to the triggering coin. It will then throw as many dynamites as its count on reel positions. It will remove the dirt symbol if it lands on Dirt. It will double its coin value if it lands on Coin. Or it will activate the chest if it lands on Chest.
• Beer – Reactivates up to 5 old Coins which makes them trigger their respective enhancers for the next spin. The triggering coin gets a value of 1x.
• Dwarf – Collects all values in the reel area at the triggering coin position.

There’s also an additional 7^th reel during this bonus round that may reveal Upgrade symbols on each spin. All Coins from the enhancer that land on the Upgrade symbol row will gain one of the following:

• Coin values and Multiplier will cause the Coin to continue to stay active for the next spin.
• Dynamite, Beer and Dwarf features become persistent features, activating their modifiers until the bonus round ends.

It’s also important to note that the bottom row Collect Chest can be activated by Dynamites. When activated, it will collect the values in the reel area for the corresponding column above for every spin. The bonus round will end if the reels are full and there are no active features for the spins that are left.

xBet feature

When the xBet is active, 1 or Bonus Scatters are guaranteed to land on the last inactive row on each spin at the cost of 2.5 x base bet. All Dirt positions are removed from the base game too, and any buried features will be triggered as soon as they’re on any active reel.

When I first loaded the Fire in the Hole 2 slot, I was expecting a few enhancements. The visuals and the overall design are fantastic. But 3 years on from the original release, you’d expect the aesthetics to be better. There’s not a whole lot of difference between the previous slot and this one. But that’s not a bad thing as the original was so good.

The max win potential is higher at 65,000 x bet, which is great to see. They call it El Beerado if you manage to land the top prize, and I’m sure that you’d crack one open if you managed it and like beer! But with extreme volatility, the chances of landing big wins are few and far between, so just understand that while it’s possible to win big, it’s going to be a rare occurrence here.

The Lucky Wagon Spins feature is where the main action is at with all the modifiers that come with it. The bonus features are brilliant and the slot as a whole is brilliant.
