The Oxygen slot is played on a 6×7 grid and uses the Cluster Pays mechanic. Wins are formed by landing 5 or more identical symbols in a cluster that are connected vertically or horizontally. Wins are then removed and the remaining symbols will fall until they reach a new resting position. New symbols drop from above to fill in the empty gaps. This process continues until no new winners are formed.

Stakes range from just 20p up to £100 per spin, thus catering to all pockets. Like all ELK slots, just hit the coins icon to the left of the reels to adjust your total bet. There are 12 predefined values to pick from. Autospins and Quick Play are also options for non-UK players.

Theme: explore the deep blue sea

The Oxygen slot takes you deep under the ocean floor where there’s a shipwreck in the background as you spin away as well as bubbles appearing every now and then on either side of the grid. The title’s ironic as there is obviously no water underwater. The visuals are bold and colourful and I like the way the symbols disappear from the grid after a winning combination.

In terms of the soundtrack, it’s quite melodic but repetitive. I didn’t mind it, but you may well reach for the mute button after a while. Land the bonus feature and the audio is more upbeat to give that dramatic effect as you spin away hoping to land some winners. The background doesn’t change at all, which is a shame as I do like it when there’s a clear distinction between the base game and the bonus features.

On the reels, the different coloured gems in fishing nets make up the lower-paying symbols. These are joined by higher-paying fish and a diving helmet. The diving helmet is the most rewarding symbol, paying 1 to 100 x your total stake for 5 to 14+ in a cluster.

Oxygen Bonus Features

Wilds

We’ve mentioned the Wilds in the table above, but let’s break down what each one does here as most slots only come with one Wild in the game. You may also have skipped over the table above, so just in case you missed it:

• Wild – A typical Wild that simply substitutes for all paying symbols.
• Exploding Wild – Activates when it is part of a winning cluster. It removes all payout symbols within an X-shape area above and below itself. It will then detonate when no more winning combinations appear. All features within the X-Shape area will be triggered.
• X-Blaster Wild – Triggers when it’s part of a winning cluster. A random paying symbol or standard Wild is selected and replaces all paying symbols in an X-Shape. Exploding Wilds or X-Blasters will turn into standard Wilds.

Multiplier features

Multipliers play a huge part in the Oxygen slot. Name the Oxygen Bubble feature, every winning combination doubles the multiplier value on each of the winning symbol positions. This can continue up to a maximum multiplier of 2,048x. The multiplier values are reset between spins but they remain persistent during the Free Drops Bonus Game.

There are also a few multiplier features that can randomly trigger on any spin:

• Multiplier Strike – Trigegred on any symbol drop or free drop, this feature places a random number of multipliers on the grid.
• Collector – Collects all multiplier values in view. It activates when part of a winning cluster and can be persistent.
• Dealer – Multiplies all multipliers in the direction of the radar. This can activate when part of a winning cluster and it can also be persistent.

Free Drop Bonus Game

Land 3 Bonus Scatters in the base game to trigger this feature. All multiplier values are persistent throughout the bonus round, which is the opposite of the base game. You will start with 10 free drops and the feature will end when you run out.

Super Bonus Game

If you manage to land 3 Bonus Scatters as well as a persistent multiplier feature, you will get 10 super bonus drops. During this bonus round, multipliers are persistent like the standard Bonus Game but at least 1 multiplier feature is persistent here too. Land 2 or 3 Bonus Scatters to receive 2 or 5 additional free drops respectively.

X-iter feature

Finally, there is an X-iter feature for players located outside the United Kingdom. As always, there are 5 options ranging between 3 and 500 x the bet:

I won’t be the only person to mention that this feels like Sugar Rush from Pragmatic Play. Ok, so the theme is completely different, but the multipliers doubling each time, the wrappers and the mechanics of it all are very similar. But ELK Studios has enhanced the features to pip the  Pragmatic title in my opinion. 25,000 x max wins and medium variance help cushion the blow of the low RTP rate of 94%.

Something to also bear in mind here is the 36% hit frequency. This means that over a third of all spins on average will result in a winning combination, which is very generous. I must admit that I did trigger the Free Drop Bonus Game a few times when testing this slot thoroughly and I enjoyed plenty of multipliers too.
