A decidedly creepy big top is the setting for Wicked Circus, a beautifully designed 5 reel, 10 payline video slot from Scandinavian developer Yggdrasil Gaming. It comes with a special Jokerizer Mode that offers mystery prizes that can top 6,000 coins as well as a hold option that allows you to lock the reels containing jokers but re-spin the rest. Available to play across all devices, play from 10p to £10 per spin.

Yggdrasil Gaming has certainly helped raise the bar as far as the look and sounds of online slots go and Wicked Circus is a case in point as it looks and sounds superb. Set against the backdrop of the interior of a circus caravan, the reels include a selection of classic symbols.

Look out for cherries, lemons, grapes, bells, lucky 7s and magic stars – the latter is the best of the standard symbols, awarding 300 coins for a 5-symbol combination. Those combinations can be formed from right to left as well as the more usual left to right. The symbols are superbly drawn. It’s a similar story for the catchy baking track which includes squeals of laughter and tension inducing drum rolls. A big thumbs up then for Yggdrasil Gaming’s designers.

What of the features? The chief attraction in Wicked Circus is the Jokerizer Mode which becomes active after any win – a 1 payline win gives you 1 spin in Jokerizer Mode. Two give 2, three offer 3 and so on. Keep tabs on the number in the meter below the reels.

All the winnings are then pooled together in the Jokerizer balance (which you can see above the reels) – you then have the choice to collect this or spend 20 coins for a spin in Jokerizer Mode where wins are easier to come by. If you collect, Jokerizer Mode is deactivated.

The Joker is the crucial symbol here – land 2 or more of them for a Mystery Win prize (you can also win Mystery Prizes outside Jokerizer Mode but you’ll need to land at least three jokers). Two Jokers awards between 40 and 400 coins. Three will get you between 500 and 1,000. Land four Jokers for a payout of between 800 and 3,000 coins. Find a full five and a 2,000 to 6,000-coin payday awaits. Win over 500 coins and Jokerizer Mode is deactivated.

Land 2 or more Jokers while in Jokerizer Mode and you’ll be given the option to hold them in place – each subsequent spin with the Jokers held in place will set you back 60 coins. You’ll then have the remainder of the Jokerizer Mode spins to try and land a full complement of 5 Jokers and the big prizes that come with them.

Wicked Circus takes a little getting used to – a few plays in play mode and you’ll quickly get up to speed with mechanics of Jokerizer Mode though and the potential goodies on offer courtesy of the hold. On the variance scale, Wicked Circus sits somewhere north of medium. Expect plenty of lean spells when very little appears to be happening. The Joker can really get the coins flying though, especially during Jokerizer Mode.

Beautifully designed as always from Yggdrasil Gaming, Wicked Circus won’t be to everyone’s taste as far as gameplay goes. If you’re looking for a very different slot from the norm as far as features go, then Wicked Circus puts on a fine performance.

And if the creepy clown puts in an appearance, this show can certainly deliver plenty of thrills. There are 3 other Yggdrasil Gaming slots featuring the joker – with The Dark Joker Rizes being my favourite.
