Valley of the Dead RTP, Details & Wager Limits
Reels/Paylines: 5 reels + up to 3,125 paylines
Stakes Range: 10p to £100
Max Win: 5,800x stake per spin
RTP: 94%
The Valley of the Dead slot game by Yggdrasil Gaming follows the same structure as Valley of the Gods: 5 reels, 5 rows, and up to 3,125 ways to win. However, the game starts on a 1-3-5-3-1 layout with 45 ways to win. As you break the BoltLock blockers (skull icons), the number of symbols on the reels increases, pushing the number of winning ways to the maximum.
A winning combination is created by landing 3 or more matching symbols on the reels, starting from left to right. Stakes range between 10p to £100 per spin. You can adjust the bet size by tapping the coins icon to select your preferred stake amount.
With the Autoplay feature, you can choose between 10 and an infinite number of autospins and use the stop loss settings. However, this feature is not available at UK online casinos.
The Valley of the Dead RTP is 94%, dropping from 96.2% in Valley of the Gods 2. I find this quite disappointing, and obviously, it won’t make it to the list of the best payout slots in my books. Even more unsatisfactory is that some operators offer a 90.5% RTP version. The medium-high volatility serves as a much-needed consolation, striking a balance between hitting large payouts and a high frequency of wins.
Another downturn I noted during my review is the Valley of the Dead max win, set at 5,800x. I won’t say I was overly disappointed with this, considering that the Valley of the Gods series doesn’t really rank among the best real-money slotseither. Nonetheless, big wins come when the reels expand to a maximum of 3,125 ways to win and awards increasing multipliers.
Theme—Only the Brave Can Make It Out of the Underworld
Theme: Greek Mythology
High-Value Symbol: Hades (Red Deity)
Compatibility: Mobile, Tablet, Desktop
While it follows the mythological theme like the Valley of the Gods series, Valley of the Dead is more dark and hair-raising as it brings us to the morose underworld from ancient Greek myths. Still, the distinctly dark atmosphere and the black statues flanking the reels reminded me a lot of Hand of Anubis by Hacksaw Gaming.
The reel action takes place in a dimly lit temple with a number of skulls on display, which turn blue and red upon unlocking all symbol positions. The misty background contributes to the chilling atmosphere—you never know what may pop out. The ominous soundtrack intensifies the frightening experience, making every spin feel like a step into the underworld.
When the reels start spinning, you will find mythological characters like Cerberus, Persephone, and Hades raking in the highest wins, while metallic tokens or coins bring low-paying wins. Notably, unlike most new online slots, this title has neither a wild nor a scatter symbol. Check out the paytable below:
Symbol | Payouts/Info |
---|---|
Coin with letters | 3, 4, 5 = 0.24, 0.48, 1x stake |
Skull coin | 3, 4, 5 = 0.24, 0.48, 1x stake |
Faun coin | 3, 4, 5 = 0.28, 0.6, 1.2x stake |
Wolf coin | 3, 4, 5 = 0.28, 0.6, 1.2x stake |
Medusa coin | 3, 4, 5 = 0.32, 0.8, 1.6x stake |
Emperor coin | 3, 4, 5 = 0.32, 0.8, 1.6x stake |
Blue Minotaur | 3, 4, 5 = 1, 3, 10x stake |
Green Cerberus | 3, 4, 5 = 1, 3, 10x stake |
Purple Persephone | 3, 4, 5 = 2, 6, 20x stake |
Red Hades | 3, 4, 5 = 2, 6, 20x stake |
Valley of the Dead Mobile Slot
If you enjoy the convenience of mobile casinos, I recommend you opt for the Valley of the Dead mobile slot. Created with HTML5, it runs on iOS and Android devices without reducing the sharp designs or diminishing the thrilling gameplay in any way.
At the same time, the game loads in a breeze and runs smoothly even when you destroy the blockers, and the gameplay becomes more complex.
Valley of the Dead Bonus Features
Valley of the Dead doesn’t have specific symbols that would trigger an extra bonus round with free spins that many online slots feature nowadays. Still, every win comes with a promise of a respin that destroys the blockers and brings more opportunities to score. With increasing multipliers and extra lives, you can shoot for the maximum payout in the bonus round.
Respins
Every winning spin triggers a respin and continues until no more winning combinations appear on the reels. This works like the familiar cascading reels mechanic. However, here, winning symbols are not removed from the reels, and new symbols don’t fall from above.
The base game starts with a diamond-shaped layout (1-3-5-3-1) and 12 BoltLock blockers, with skulls covering 12 positions. Each time you hit a win, you destroy as many BoltLock blockers as there are winning symbols. This allows for new symbols to appear in the unlocked positions, bringing more opportunities to land a win.
If you are lucky enough to destroy all blockers on resulting spins, you play with 25 symbols (5×5 grid) on the reels. Consequently, this brings the number of ways to win to 3,125. Such a feat also activates Win Multipliers and Extra Lives. Once the respins end, the reels return to default.
Extra Lives
When you destroy all the BoltLocker blockers, you get 1 extra life. By collecting 5 skulls that come out of warm-coloured symbols on the reels during a respin, you will get another life. Track the collection progress on the statue on the right.
These lives trigger respins when you don’t land any winning combos, decreasing by 1 each time. The respins end when no more lives are left.
Win Multipliers
After you manage to destroy all the blocks, cold-coloured symbols release blue skulls. They are collected towards the Win Multiplier feature on the left side of the reels. The value of the multiplier increases by 1 every time you collect 5 blue skulls on a respin.
Keep in mind that the multiplier value is not awarded to the triggering spin but to the respin that follows. Multipliers are cleared at the end of the respin round, and the reels return to their default shape.
OnlyWins and Multi OnlyWins (Unavailable in UK Online Casinos)
With the OnlyWins feature active, every single spin is guaranteed to hit a winning combination. It costs 4.4x your total bet. On the other hand, the Multi OnlyWins feature awards 10 spins with guaranteed wins, and it costs 44x your bet.
Unfortunately, you cannot use these features at UK slot sites.
Valley of the Dead Verdict—Captivating Visuals but Low Payouts
Yggdrasil has gone all out with the visuals of this release. Despite sampling a few designs from its predecessors, Valley of the Dead has a unique eerie atmosphere that sparks a roller coaster of emotions. For me, it all felt quite ominous at first glance, but the spookiness gave way to excitement as I started destroying the BoltLockers.
However, I noted a few letdowns on the technical side. First, the game’s RTP is only 94% at best. This is lower than the standard average for online slot games. It is also a significant disappointment compared to the values in the games that served as inspiration for this title. The 5,800x max win is also nothing to write home about.
The gameplay is quite interesting and brings some fresh air. However, there’s no excitement that follows triggering the free spins round in other games. Clearing all the blockers and triggering extra lives and multipliers is fun, but this comes around way too rarely.
Overall, the Valley of the Dead slot game has fantastic visuals but does not offer spectacular rewards.
