The game is based on the long-distance passenger train which was the epitome of luxury and comfort back in the early 19th century. It comes with distinct base game and free spins modes, each based on cities the Orient Express travelled to.

Visually, it has cartoon graphics which are superbly done – the soundtrack is very relaxing and takes you back to an era which luxury was much desired. Symbols on the reels include 4 distinguished travellers and 4 lower value playing card symbols. There’s also an Orient Express wild which appears in all modes and 3 other wilds which appear respectively in Paris, Belgrade and Istanbul.

Orient Express comes with 4 modes: Paris, Venice, Belgrade and Istanbul. You will begin in Paris and travel to the other cities after completing the Free Spins feature in your current city. Once you reach Istanbul, you will be able to pick the city of your choice once you complete a Free Spins feature.

When it comes to Paris, look out for walking wilds which are represented by a ticket inspector – they appear on top of random symbols after the reels stop spinning. They will give you a free re-spin and move left to the next reel – the re-spins continue as long as at least 1 walking wild is on the reels. Obviously, new walking wild symbols can appear during the re-spins.

In Venice, a win multiplier ranging between 2x and 5x can appear randomly after a winning spin. In Belgrade, you can benefit from wild reels. You will see trains drive across the reels (from right to left) changing a reel into a wild reel when they stop. Up to 3 reels be turned fully wild!

In Istanbul, you have random wilds where postcards fly onto randomly-chosen symbols transforming them into wilds. There are 4 random wilds (represented by the 4 cities) with between 2 and 12 symbols turning wild.

The features are more prominent in the Free Spin feature which is played when you get 3 or more Free Spin symbols anywhere on the reels. 3 will give you 7 free spins whilst 4 give you 15 free spins. If you get 5 scatters, you will benefit from 30 free spins. You can retrigger the feature potentially giving you 60 free spins in total.

Now, all the features from the base game play out more often in the Free Spin feature – in Paris, more walking wilds appear more often. In Venice, a multiplier between 2x and 5x applies to all free spins. In Belgrade, between 1 and 3 reels become wild reels on each free spin. Finally, in Istanbul, between 2 and 12 symbols become wilds on each free spin.

Orient Express is quite similar in terms of gameplay to Yggdrasil Gaming’s Seasons. However, this is a better game in my opinion as the graphics and theme are more appealing. Saying that, the variance is in the low to medium bracket with potential wins of 200 times your stake per spin. I found the best city was Belgrade or Istanbul due to the potential of 3 wild reels and up to 12 random wilds on each free spin!
