The MexoMax slot is played on a 6×6 grid and uses a Cluster Pays mechanic. A grid slot essentially, a win can be formed when 5 or more matching symbols link or appear adjacent to one another, i.e. in a cluster. The bigger the cluster, the larger the reward.

Symbols all appear on stone slabs. They include 4 low value animals and 4 higher value Mayan masks. The red Mayan mask is the most lucrative symbol as 14+ in a cluster will award 9.25 x your total bet.

MexoMax Bonus Features

With 6 bonus features, the MexoMax slot has quite a lot going on. Every win gives you a Dropdown (cascade) as well as wilds which increase Reel Multipliers. With random treasure chest prizes, the main extra is the Free Spins feature where Reel Multipliers can only increase for up to 10,000 x bet wins.

Dropdown feature

After any winning cluster is formed, the Dropdown feature applies. The winning symbols are removed from the reels which allows room for new symbols to drop down. This gives you the opportunity for more wins. The Dropdowns continue as long as new wins are created. This is commonly known as the Cascades, Cascading Wins or Avalanche feature in other grid slots.

Multiplier feature

After each Dropdown, a heart wild symbol is added to 1 of the empty spaces. Known as the Multiplier feature, the Reel Multiplier on that reel increases by 1. The Reel Multiplier applies to all winning clusters on that reel.

Successive dropdowns sees the Reel Multiplier increase each time. This allows for multipliers on multiple reels which then stack/multiply. Having a 2x multiplier on reel 1 and a 3x multiplier on reel 2 will see a 6x multiplier applied to that winning cluster (3 x 2 = 6). Finally, the multiplier value resets between base game spins.

Treasure Chest feature

In the base game and free spins, treasure chest symbols can land randomly. Called the Treasure Chest feature, they open to reward you with cash prizes, free spins an extra wild symbols. Treasure chests, with a different design of course, feature in other Yggdrasil Gaming slots such as Vikings Go To Valhalla and Golden Fish Tank 2 Gigablox.

Free Spins feature

The Free Spins feature will be played when you land 3 or more Free Spins scatters anywhere on the grid. 3, 4 or 5 scatters will award 7, 9 or 11 free spins respectively.

Before the free spins begin, you can gamble for more free spins (unless you’ve trigger the feature with 6 scatters). Each successful gamble with award 2 more free spins. If you lose, you’ll revert back to the base game. During the feature, landing 3 or more scatters will give you 4 extra free spins, with no limits.

As in the base game, Reel Multipliers are in play with you get a winning cluster and the heart wild appears. More importantly, multipliers do no reset between free spins. This means multipliers can only increase. It also means you can build up multipliers on all 6 reels hopefully.

Treasure chest symbols can also randomly land on the grid to award cash bonuses, additional free spins and added wilds. The added extra is a win multiplier increase for all 6 reels.

In the base game, you will notice there is a Golden Bet feature. You can play an extra 25% more per spin which doubles your chances of triggering the Free Spins feature.

Lastly, there is Buy Bonus feature. For 75 x your total bet, you will enter the Free Spins feature with 7 free spins. If you want the maximum number of initial free spins (11), it will set you back 250 x your total bet. This option isn’t available in the UK though.

MexoMax Review Summary – free spins multipliers key to discovering hidden treasures

Speaking aesthetically, Yggdrasil Gaming have done a good job with the MexoMax slot game. The graphics are superb and the moving backdrop really brings the action to life. That said, it does look a lot like the MultiFly and Raptor DoubleMax slots (both by Yggdrasil).

The random treasure chests are a nice little touch but have been found in other games like the Vikings series. With Dropdown wins and Reel Multipliers, MultiFly has proven to be the inspiration. MexoMax also has free spins where Reel Multipliers don’t reset between free spins.

The max win of 10,000 x your total bet is the same too. The difference is one is a grid slot and the other has 5 reels and 243 ways to win. With Raptor DoubleMax, the max win potential is double (20,000 x stake)

Speaking of the free spins, the way the Reel Multipliers can combine is exciting. You will have plenty of ‘nothing’ spins and then 1 winning cluster can land with various multipliers multiplying for a huge payday.

So in summary, MexoMax is not unique in terms of gameplay but Yggdrasil has combined popular bonus features into the popular Cluster Pays mechanic. Does it stand out against other grid slots? Unfortunately not enough.
