Fruitoids is a 5 reel, 25 payline slot from developer Yggdrasil Gaming. You won’t find traditional cherries, lemons, plums or oranges on these reels though. This is no classic fruit machine re-tread. It’s a futuristic looking offering that comes with respins and expanding multipliers. Stakes range from between 25p and £50 per spin.

Like many of Yggdrasil Gaming’s slot portfolio, Fruitoids is a deceptively simple affair. It’s not weighed down by complex feature rounds instead it offers a little something extra to the base game and hammers it for all that it’s worth.

In this case, the base game is boosted by a Re-Spin feature. Find 3 or more of the same symbol in a payline and you’ll be awarded with a re-spin with the winning symbols frozen in place. Those re-spins will keep on coming as long as you hit another 1 of the frozen symbols anywhere on the reels.

The other major extra in the base game is an expanding multiplier. Fill at least 2 rows with the same symbol and your payline will be boosted by a 2x multiplier – the more rows you fill the bigger the multiplier on offer. 3 rows triples winning paylines while 4 quadruples it.

Manage to fill all 5 rows with the same symbol and your win will rocket thanks to a 5x multiplier. Filling a row is slightly easier than it sounds, thanks largely to the frozen symbols that keep winning paylines of 3 or more symbols frozen into place for the re-spin.

And that’s about it as far as features go – the extras come along on a fairly regular basis putting the variance in the medium range. Some caution is required but it shouldn’t eat through your bankroll like a coin-eating triffid.

The graphics, featuring a strange selection of fruit from either the future or some underwater kingdom, are nicely done and it’s all set against a surprisingly catchy backing track (which of course you have the option to switch off if it’s developing into an earworm).

They may not be the most appetising looking things but thanks to the re-spins, frozen symbols and multipliers, you’ll want to make these Fruitoids part of your 5 a day diet. I also recommend the volatile Cazino Zeppelin by Yggdrasil and Nemo’s Voyage by WMS which is also set underwater.
