The Calavera Crush slot is played on a 6×5 grid and uses Infinity Pays. Landing 8 or more matching symbols anywhere on the grid will award a win. The more matching symbols, the bigger the payout. Symbols don’t need to appear adjacent to one another though like a grid slot. It works a little like Playtech’s Monster Multipliers which calls it Pay Anywhere.

With a Mexican theme, the Calavera Crush slot takes you to a fiesta of the fun and the fallen. In a tribute to all souls, this Day of the Dead inspired game looks a little like Esqueleto Explosivo 2 by Thunderkick. Set within some kind of arena, it looks like a ceremony for loved ones who have passed onto the other side. The atmosphere is rather subdued for a slot with this theme.

The soundtrack is not Mariachi as such and rather a mixture of Spanish guitars and trumpets. On the reels, there are 6 low paying sweets symbols (triangle lollipops, cupcakes, round lollipops, doughnuts, wrapped candy and fried ice cream cake) with 4 higher paying skulls (or calaveras). With 5 bonus features, the Calavera Crush slot comes with Avalanches that add wilds that increase the multiplier by u to 3. In the free spins, this also occurs but the multiplier can rise by up to 10. Importantly, the multiplier doesn’t reset between free spins.

Avalanche feature

When any win occurs, the Avalanche feature is triggered. All participating symbols in the win are removed with all remaining symbols pushed down to fill the vacated spaces. A Piñata Wild is then added to 1 of the winning positions before the rest of the empty spaces are filled with new symbols.

Every wild landing will randomly increase the multiplier by 1, 2 or 3. You can see the currently multiplier to the bottom left-hand corner of the reels (on top of the candles). Another win will give you another avalanche will more wilds and increasing multipliers. The multiplier is reset after every losing avalanche in the base game.

Free Spins feature

The Free Spins feature is played when 4 or more Free Spins scatters land anywhere on the reels. 4, 5 or 6 scatters will award 8, 12 or 18 free spins respectively. If you trigger the feature with 4 or 5 scatters you can use the Gamble feature for a chance to play with more free spins. If you lose the gamble, you will revert back to the base game. The maximum number of free spins you can begin with is 18.

More importantly, the multiplier does not reset between free spins. This means it can rise with no limits. The multiplier increases by getting a win/avalanche will then add a Piñata Wild symbol. Unlike the base game, the multiplier rises by up to 10. During the feature, 4 or more scatters during a single free spin will see 4 additional free spins added to your tally, with no limits.

Calavera Crush Review Summary – a rather sombre ceremony for the dead

The Day of the Dead/Mexican storyline is very popular amongst slot providers but the Calavera Crush slot doesn’t quite do it justice. The graphics and soundtrack are rather understated and it feels like a filler game from Yggdrasil Gaming.

In terms of gameplay, I do like the fact that Piñata Wilds are added after an avalanche which will see the multiplier increase by up to 3 in the base game. The action hots up in the Free Spins feature where the multiplier rises by up to 10 when a Piñata Wild appears. With a non-resetting multiplier, the potential for big wins should be big.

However, offering 5,000 x bet max wins per spin or free spin, there are other Mexican themed slots which offer bigger win potential. Playtech’s Chilli Xtreme comes with 10,000 x bet top payouts as well as random features, explosions, free spins and up to 262,144 ways to win.
