Available at many top UK slot sites, each spin in Ways of Athena starts on a 5-reel, 3-row machine that offers 243 ways to win. As you’ll discover shortly, there are opportunities to greatly increase the number of ways to win.
Stakes in this ancient adventure range between 10p and £100 per spin. Autoplay lets you run between 5 and 5,000 spins with adjustable win, loss and feature stop limits. This isn’t available to players in the UK, though.
While playing the demo version, I noticed the setting is rather tranquil, but that’s certainly not how you’d describe the Ways of Athena volatility, which falls in the high category. That’s also true of the max win, which is an Olympian 25,000x stake. The RTP is well below average, though, at 94.21%, a long way back from the best RTP slots.
Theme—Ancient Greece Minus the Togas
The provider created a rather delightful rural setting to Ways of Athena. The ancient Athenian countryside and a marble-columned building form the backdrop for the reels.
Spinning around the reels are marble-style playing card values from 10 to alongside an ornately designed urn, a harp, a shield and a warrior’s helmet. Athena is the most rewarding standard symbol, paying a 5x stake if you land a 5-of-a-kind winner. That same amount is on offer from the owl, which is the Wild. This symbol substitutes for all the standard symbols in a winning combo.
The statue of Athena is the Scatter symbol. Land 3 or more of these on the same spin to trigger the Free Spin feature.
I really liked the design. It’s stylish, understated and rather elegant, which isn’t something you can say about many new slots.
The harp-heavy soundtrack is easy on the ear and fits the theme beautifully. Like most slots in the Thunderkick catalogue, I found the design in Ways of Athena superb.

The gameplay is pretty simple, but a few bonus features can really ramp up the action. Mystery symbols transform and bring extra ways to win into play. There’s also a Free Spin bonus where the ways to win can soar even higher.
Matching Mystery Symbol
The flaming cauldron is the Mystery Matching Symbol. Up to 2 of these symbols can land on reels 2, 3, 4, or 5 on each spin. When they land, they transform into a symbol that appears on reel 1. They also become double symbols, paying twice per symbol.
Bonus Game—Up to 44 Free Spins

Ways of Athena Verdict: A Terrific Trip Back to Ancient Greece
The classical age is one of my favourite slot themes, so Thunderkick had a lot to live up to when I fired up Ways of Athena. I’m pleased to say that this is more than up to the task.
First impressions are terrific. This is up there with the best online slots when it comes to design. The imagery is tasteful and sophisticated, and the soundtrack is beautifully understated.
Good looks count for little if the gameplay doesn’t match, but Thunderkick has delivered here, too. Granted, the range of extras isn’t massive. The Mystery Matching Symbols can certainly rev up the base game. However, it’s the Free Spins that offer the best opportunities. Land a good haul of Free Spins, then fill the meter to increase the winways, and the action can really start the motor.
The beautiful setting might trick you into thinking this is a rather gentle slot game—it’s definitely not. The volatility here is high, but so is the 25,000x max win. One negative is the skinny 94,19% RTP.
That aside, I found plenty to enjoy in Wisdom of Athena. If you like the ancient theme, you’d be wise to give it a look.
