The Manimals slot is played on 5 reels and up to 32,678 ways to win.  Randomly, the number of symbols that can land on each reel varies from between 4 and 8 on each base game spin. That changes the number of ways you can potentially form a winner.

The minimum number of ways to win is 1,024. This rises to a maximum of 32,768 if all 5 reels contain the maximum number of symbols. Land 3, 4 or 5 matching symbols or wilds on adjacent reels, starting from reel 1 and you’ll land a winner.

Theme: head to a dystopian future

With a dystopian/animal theme, there’s a gritty, sci-fi feel to the design in the Manimals slot. This future dystopia reminded us a bit of Blade Runner (if a little less neon).

The industrial setting looks a bit grimy but the shimmering screens that surround the reels hint that we’re looking into the future. Accompanying the action is a rather intense soundtrack that could come straight from a low-budget Hollywood sci-fi movie. It certainly ramps up the intensity.

The reels include lower value A to 10 royals and 5 genetically enhanced animal symbols. They include a dog, a shark, a gorilla, a tiger and a dinosaur. With the dinosaur symbol as the highest paying, landing 5 will reward you with 10 x your total bet.

The W is the wild. That can land anywhere apart from reel 1 and substitute for all the standard symbols. The golden B is the Scatter. Land 3 or more of these on the same spin to activate the main bonus feature. Here’s what each symbol pays out:

Cascading Reels feature

After a winning combination hits, the successful symbols are blasted off the reels. New symbols drop down and replace them and a new payout consideration follows. The cascades keep on coming as long as a new winner is created.

Reel Modifier features

These can trigger at random on any spin and replace all the standard symbols on a reel:

• Stacks feature: Stacks of higher-value animal symbols can fill the whole of a reel when this modifier is unleashed. Better still, the animal can form an Epic Stack and fill 2 adjacent reels with the same matching stack of symbols.
• Quake feature: Once triggered, all the lower-value royal symbols are removed from the game grid. The remaining high-value animal symbols plus any wilds and scatters drop to the lowest positions on the reels. New symbols then appear above them and a new payout consideration is made with the new symbol combination in place.
• Blaster Disaster feature: The grenade symbol can appear on reels 2, 3 and 4 to trigger the Blaster Disaster. Connecting symbols are highlighted and then removed. New symbols drop into the vacated positions and a new payout consideration is made.

Free Spins feature

Land 3, 4 or 5 Bonus Scatter symbols on the same spin and you’ll receive 8, 10 or 15 free spins. If the cascading reels increase the number of ways to win during the free spins, they will persist for the remainder of the Free Spins feature. Retriggers are possible here too.

During the free spins, Wilds can only appear on reels 3, 4 and 5 as a result of being split. They then drop to the bottom of their reel and lock in place for any free spins you have left. The Reel Modifiers can hit too. In the Stacks modifier, it’s possible to get up to 16 symbols on a reel rather than the standard 8 in the base game.

If you enjoy slots with plenty of backstory, the Manimals slot should appeal. The futuristic setting is well-realized and has a certain cinematic quality about it.

The bonus features are decent enough too. There’s not much here we haven’t seen in other games, but the cascading reels and reel modifiers keep the pace high. The free spins mode can be well worth landing too, especially if you can combine with the modifier extras.

With up to 32,678 ways to win, the potential 5,000 x bet max wins is a decent outcome but not one that stands out amongst countless other slot games. The theme and setting won’t be for everyone but if you like your slots play to come with a hint of dystopia, then Manimals is worth considering.
