The El Patron slot is played across 5 reels and 5 rows, with 3125 ways to win. Winning combinations are created by landing 3 or more matching symbols on consecutive reels, in any position, starting from the leftmost reel.

You can join the Boss and his cartel for as little as 10p, up to £50 per spin. You can change your stake by clicking the + and – buttons below the reels, or by clicking the cog icon on the left-hand side.

Players outside the UK have a few more options when spinning, including an Autoplay function. With this you can choose to allow the game to spin on your behalf. There’s a minimum of 5 autospins, but there’s no maximum amount. Theme – it’s kicking off in the cartel compound

With a name like El Patron, which roughly translates to ‘the Boss’, it’s not difficult to imagine the setting for this slot. Based on the drug cartels of Mexico and South America, this slot has a heavy crime theme though it is a bit vague where we are in the world. The slot also looks and feels very similar to Narcos by Netent, which tells the story of Pablo Escobar.

In El Patron, the reels hang against a grimy compound, with beer bottles and a burnout car in the background. The reels themselves are adorned with guns, cash and ammunition, whilst a guitar soundtrack helps set the scene.

On the reels, you’ll find a variety of weapons, cigars and whisky as the lower paying symbols. Higher values are represented by cartel members, with El Patron himself as the highest paying symbol. He awards up to 10 x bet for a 5 of a kind combination.

The game also has a wild symbol represented by a case of cash. This can appear in the base game and bonus rounds, and can have different functions. We’ll talk about these more in the next section of our El Patron slot review.

El Patron Bonus Features

Action feature

During the base game, there are two bonus reels on the top and bottom of the reels. The bottom top bonus reel can provide action symbols, while the bottom bonus reel contains wild symbols. If an action symbol and a wild appear above and below the same reel, it will trigger 1 of 3 action features.

Free Spins feature

Land 3 bullet scatter symbols anywhere on the reels to receive 12 free spins. In the Free Spins feature, the bottom bonus reel displays machine gun symbols only. The top bonus reel now carries 3 different modifiers. If these land at the top and bottom of the same reel, you’ll trigger the following features:

The Free Spins round can be very rewarding and it’s also visually impressive. When you trigger 1 of the bonus features listed above, a machine gun will appear to the left of the reels, firing your wilds onto the reels. It adds a lot of drama, and it’s nice to see something more unique.

Bonus Buy feature

El Patron Review Summary – a decent take on an increasingly popular theme

Since the release of the Narcos TV series, there’s definitely been an uptake in interest around the lawless lives of drug cartels. In the El Patron slot, Stakelogic has done justice to the theme, even if the imagery does feel very similar to other slots.

In terms of gameplay, the Action feature is enjoyable, but given the high volatility of the game, you can end up tons of dead spins before anything happens. The real action comes in the Free Spins round. Here it’s entirely possible to rack up some big wins, especially if you trigger the sticky wild feature.

Overall, El Patron will appeal to fans the theme, who also have the bankroll to play such a high volatility game. The RTP rate is fair at 96.5%, and we think even the drug lords would be pleased with max wins of 25,000 x your stake (or £500,000).
