The action in Dragon’s Dawn plays out on a 6 reel, 6 row game grid. To create a winning combination, you need to land 8 or more of the same symbol (or wild) anywhere on the reels. After a winning combination hits, those symbols are blasted from the reels and new symbols drop in and replace them. If a new winner hits, the process is repeated. The avalanches continue as long as there’s a winner on display. With each successive win, a multiplier increases by 1x. In the base game, this resets to 1x following a winless avalanche.

In some areas, you’ll have the option to set up autoplay and quick play modes. You can set between 5 and 2,500 autospins and win and stop limits to suit. Neither autoplay nor quick spin mode are available to UK players.

Theme: enter the magical light realm

The design in Dragon’s Dawn is superbly done. Think Lord of the Rings crossed with Game of Thrones. A mysterious location known as the Light Realm is the setting here. Set against a woodland backdrop with a castle in the background, the reels are made up of A to J royals, 4 mid-ranking gemstones and a quartet of higher paying dragons. The best of these is the red dragon edged in flame which pays 200 x stake if you land 12 or more on the same spin.

The gold W is the wild. This replaces everything apart from the bonus symbol and like the top dragon, has a maximum payout of 200 x stake.

Rounding out the symbols is the Bonus which can land on all 6 reels. It doesn’t offer any payouts but it does trigger the feature round if you land 4, 5 or 6 of them on the same spin.

Watching over proceedings is the Gandalfesque wizard who can spring into life at random and deliver a special modifier. I’ll look at these below.

I really liked the visuals here. They’re just what you’d expect from a fantasy-themed slot and are terrifically well done.

The soundtrack has a rather haunting quality which I also liked. It adds just the right level of atmosphere without having to reach for the mute button.

There’s plenty of potential for magic in Dragon’s Dawn thanks to an impressive range of features. The wizard can unleash a trio of reel modifiers. There’s also a free spin bonus, complete with unlimited multipliers.

Lightning Strike Modifier

Between 1 and 6 reels are randomly picked and struck by a bolt of lightning. On the reels hit, all symbols are replaced by a single symbol and a new payout calculation follows.

Meteor Shower Modifier

Between 3 and 10 wilds are dropped onto random positions on the game grid and a payout consideration is made.

Portal Modifier

Once triggered, a magical portal appears. One of the standard symbols is picked at random to appear in the portal. This symbol is then dropped into a random set of positions on the reels.

Free Spins feature

Land 4, 5 or 6 Bonus symbols on the same spin and you’ll receive 8, 12 or 15 free spins. Like the base game, avalanche reels are used. Each avalanche win increases the value of a win multiplier. The big difference is that the multiplier doesn’t reset following a winless avalanche. Instead, it keeps on rising throughout the round. Re-triggers are possible here too. The aesthetics here are good and when you couple them with solid gameplay and fairly decent max win potential of 7,500 x bet, you’ve got a pretty good slot on your hands.

I found plenty to like about Dragon’s Dawn. The sound and visuals are superbly done and there’s plenty of variety in the gameplay thanks to the avalanche wins, reel modifiers and free spins.

The free spins offer the best opportunities to land a decent sized win thanks to the expanding multiplier. A re-trigger or two allows that multiplier to grow which is when the wizard can start to work his magic. Be warned though, for all its lovely looks, Dragon’s Dawn is a fiery beast and the volatility is high. Expect some lengthy spells when your bankroll will burn to a crisp. The 96% RTP is pretty standard but not bad for such a volatile slot that has a decent 7,500 x stake maximum win.

If you can cope with the potentially big swings, there’s a lot to enjoy about Dragon’s Dawn.
