Phil Taylor, Raymond van Barneveld, Gary Anderson and Michael van Gerwen become superheroes in the entertainingly bonkers Darts Heroes, a 5 reel, 243 ways to win video slot from Stake Logic. It comes with an array of wild extras as well as a bonus feature that awards up to 40 free spins. Step up to the oche from between 40p and £40 per spin.

As concepts go, they don’t come much more crackers than a Lycra-clad Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor gaining superhero powers! Surprisingly, it works rather well. A giant, futuristic arena forms the backdrop to the reels – those reels include A, K, Q and J playing cards alongside a dartboard, a 180 sign, a dart barrel and a unicorn.

The higher value symbols are Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, Gary ‘Flying Scotsman’ Anderson, Raymond ‘Barney’ van Barneveld and ‘Mighty’ Michael van Gerwen. Each of the quartet offers payouts of 25, 50 or 250 coins if you land a 3, 4 or 5-of-a-kind combination.

Each of the dart player symbols can randomly turn into a wild on any spin. The player will then go into their superhero mode and deliver wild extras with a new payout with the extra wilds in place:

  • Michael van Gerwen – a giant 2×2 wild is added.
  • Gary Anderson – a selection of expanding wilds are randomly added to the reels.
  • Raymond van Barneveld – any wilds expand vertically to fill the whole reel in which they appear.
  • Phil Taylor – wild expands to random positions.

Each player also has their own matching bonus symbol – these land on the odd-numbered reels only. Land a matching bonus symbol on reels 1, 3 and 5 on the same spin and you’ll win 200 coins as well as triggering the Free Spins feature and with it, 20 free spins.

The free spins take place on a special set of reels that are based around the player whose bonus triggered the feature. Extra wild symbols are thrown into the mix here too. The more wilds that hit, the more are added to the reels for the feature. Land 3 bonus symbols here and you’ll get another set of 20 free spins taking your total to 40.

The theme is a bit mad but we found Darts Heroes an enjoyable game – the design is pretty good. The likenesses of the players are pretty good (even if Phil Taylor has lost a bit of weight) and the shouts of 60, 140 and 180 from the gravelly MC Russ Bray add to the atmosphere.

The wild extras hit regularly and can deliver some fine results – the free spins are harder to come by but with the extra added wilds can certainly pack a punch. A Spandex-clad Phil Taylor wasn’t top of our list of themes for a slot but this darting extravaganza works well.

Combining quality design with some interesting features, Darts Heroes is a bizarre but entertaining affair. And if there’s a sequel, we hope that Steve ‘Bronzed Adonis’ Beaton’s magnificent mullet gets an outing. Stake Logic also offer Football Gladiators which is branded and features Andrea Pirlo, Robin Van Persie, Toni Kroos and Rio Ferdinand.
