The sound and visuals in Masquerade really are rather lovely – the imagery has a Victorian-era feel. A misty night sky and an imposing building form the backdrop to the reels here. Those plain white reels include 10, J and Q symbols which pay up to 5 times your stake, the K which pays up to 7.5 times your stake and the A which offers awards of up to 10 times your stake.
Next comes the top hat which pays up to 12.5 times your stake, the pocket watch which offers up to 15 times your stake and the ring which gives awards up to 25 times your stake. The mysterious masked woman is the game’s most rewarding symbol – land 3, 4 or 5 of her in combination and you’ll pocket an award of 10, 25 or 50 times your stake.
The other symbol you’ll see spinning around the reels is the Golden Masque – this can land fully stacked on all 5 reels. All of the Golden Masque symbols that land on the same spin magically transform into the same standard symbol. If this creates a winning combination, a new payout is made. Look out too for the giant Royal Masque symbol – this fills the whole of the middle 3 reels and creates a guaranteed winning combination.
That’s pretty much it as far as gameplay goes. There are no bonus feature, like free spins on offer here. All of the action revolves around the Golden Masques and their magical transforming qualities.
What’s on offer in Masquerade is very nicely done. The spins are nice and smooth, the imagery is beautifully done and the soundtrack has a magical quality. The transforming symbols land at regular intervals too to keep the pace high.
So why were we just a little disappointed? The addition of some free spins or another bonus round would have made a big difference here. The cherry on top of the proverbial cake. It’s still a perfectly fine game, but Masquerade is a case of what might have been – saying that, you can win up to 1,000 times your stake on each spin.
