In this 400th anniversary year of the death of William Shakespeare, it’s perhaps surprising there haven’t been more slots inspired by the bard’s plays. One developer to take the Shakespearean plunge is Bally Wulff which has released Book of Romeo & Julia (yes, you read that correctly, Julia!). Based on the doomed lovers, this 5 reel, 5 payline slot comes with a free spins feature complete with special bonus symbol payouts. Play from between 20p and £100 per spin.
Set against the hillside backdrop of 16th century Verona, the reels include lower value playing cards, an envelope with quill and ink, a dagger and of course the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Julia – land 5 of the latter for a payout of 100 times your total stake.
The book is the game’s wild – it substitutes for all other symbols. The book serves a dual role as it’s also the scatter. Landing 3 or more of them anywhere on the reels will trigger the Free Games feature and with it, 10 free spins.
The added extra here is the arrival of a mystery symbol which is chosen at random before the free spins start. Whenever this symbol lands during the feature, it will expand to fill up the entire reel or better still reels in which it appears. Hope to see those books land again as even more free spins are on offer here (up to 20 in total possible).
We found the variance in Book of Romeo and Julia to be pretty high – the 5 paylines means that you’ll go through lengthy spells when very little boosts the cashier. Hope to make up for that when you trigger the feature though which can be lucrative if you land a high value mystery symbol and then re-trigger even more free spins.
Visually, Book of Romeo & Julia isn’t the most sophisticated you’ll come across but it does the job – the features are pretty simple too. This is a pretty stripped back adaptation. It does have its charms though, especially the bonus round. It won’t go down as a classic but if you’re after some simple to play literary inspired action, you could do worse than opening this book. I also recommend you try Bally Wulff’s Queen of the North which comes with expanding wilds in the feature.
