Theme: head into the icy wildnerness

Like most Relax Gaming slots, this one is nothing short of great. The bright, frozen, blueish layout and design in Primal Times are beautiful. The base game transports players back to the Ice Age.

Accompanying the action is a rhythmical, rather primitive (primitive in the best way), drum-heavy soundtrack. Combined with the roars from the wild animals that herald each winning spin, it delivers plenty of atmosphere.

The reels consist of playing card suit symbols on blocks of stone alongside five higher-value animal symbols.  Cascading Reels

Land a winning combination to have successful symbols blasted from the game grid, and new symbols drop in to replace them. A new payout consideration is made. If a new winning combination is formed, the process is repeated. The cascades continue as long as a new winner lands.

You’ll notice that the top 6 rows of the game grid are frozen in ice at the start of each spin. Look out for symbols that have a meteorite icon attached to them. These fire up to a frozen position directly above and unlock it, activating that previously frozen symbol. This also increases the number of ways you can potentially create a winning combination. If you unlock all 3 frozen positions on a reel, the whole reel turns wild.

When all the cascades have played out, the reels return to their default position with the top 3 rows locked.

Multiplier Flow

Below the reels, you’ll see the Multiplier Flow. This conveyor belt can contain blanks, bonus symbols or multipliers and shifts one position to the left with each spin (although it remains static once a set of cascades has started). These multipliers can be worth 1x and 10x.

The multipliers become live when a wild reel directly above drops down onto it. Wins that include that wild are boosted by the value of the now active multiplier. Better still is when you activate more than one wild reel multiplier as their values are combined to deliver an even bigger payout boost. For example, winners containing 2x and 5x multipliers are boosted to 10x.

Meltdown Free Spins

There are plenty of moving parts when it comes to the gameplay in Primal Times. It takes a bit of getting used to all the meteor blasts, unfreezing of symbols and potentially wild reels. It also means that there’s loads of action. The pace is high and there’s usually something going on.

The bonus round has the potential to be a cracker thanks to the wild reels and multipliers. Land a good combination of these and the coins can quickly flow. I found the volatility to be high, so tread carefully.

Visually, Relax Gaming has done a terrific job with the design of this prehistoric epic. It looks and sounds superb which is just as well given all the moving parts.
