Sadly for Manchester United fans, the Erik the Red slot isn’t about the Monsieur Cantona (but what a slot that could be!). It is in fact a 5 reel, 20 payline Viking-themed game from Relax Gaming. Boasting superb sound and visuals, it comes with mystery symbol stacks on each spin as well as a free spins round with the potential for locked stacked wilds. Play on all devices from between 10p and £100 per spin.

You won’t find many better-looking slots than Erik the Red. With menacing looking Viking longships in the background, the reels are set within the billowing sails of a boat. There you’ll find 3 shields, a hunting horn, an axe, a helmet and a woman called Helga. The best of the standard symbols is Erik, with his magnificent red beard. Land 3, 4 or 5 of him in combination and you’ll receive a payout of 1, 2 or 4 times your total stake. The sword is the wild. It replaces everything bar the scatter and offers payouts of up to 5 times your total stake per payline.

That top payer doesn’t sound like much. On each spin, 1 symbol will be chosen to spin in full stacked formation. Land these on multiple reels and you can quickly build a big winning cluster. This is known as the Mystery Stack feature.

Land 3 scatters on the same spin to trigger the game’s Free Spins feature – on offer are 8 free spins. Land a scatter during the free spins and it illuminates a light on the meter above that reel. If you manage to fill all 4 position on a meter, the reel below will turn wild and lock in position for the rest of the feature.

The scatters from the triggering spin each light a space on a meter to get things started. If you do manage to create a stacked wild, 1 extra free spin is added to your total. You could turn all 5 reels into wild reels which would result in 5 extra free spins and 13 in total.

We enjoyed Erik the Red. The imagery is top class and the stirring soundtrack is a good fit for the adventure theme. The gameplay isn’t especially complex but the stacked symbols deliver plenty of action. The stacked, locked wilds in the free spins can deliver up to 100 times your stake per free spin.

The Viking theme is becoming increasingly popular and this is a good example of why. We’d still love to see a Cantona-themed slot. In the meantime, Erik the Red is a perfectly entertaining alternative. Overall, a great first effort from Relax Gaming.

Saying that, I would recommend you try other Norse-themed slots like Yggdrasil Gaming’s Vikings Go To Hell or Playtech’s Call of the Valkyries which offer bigger winning potential.
