The Steam Squad slot is played on a 6×6 grid and uses the Scatter Pays mechanic. 10 or more matching symbols pay anywhere on the reels. This will activate a WInning Wipeout feature where all other symbols are removed from the reels. New symbols then drop in the process continues until no new winners are formed.

Stakes range from 10p up to £20 per spin. The game might not cater to those who prefer higher stakes but it should cater to most players with a generous range. Theme – retrofuturistic fun

You don’t get much better than Relax Gaming’s Money Train 4 slot when it comes to Steampunk-themed games. But I think the visuals here are superb and much better than many other slots on the market. I also love the bold colours used on the reels to make everything stand out.

Red Tiger’s Wheel of Amp slot from back in 2018 had a Steampunk feel but it’s like chalk and cheese when comparing that to this in terms of visuals. The way the reels rise from underwater at the very start is a nice touch. The cogs spinning around the grid are a great addition too along with the smoky but stunning backdrop.

The soundtrack is quite dramatic as you spin the reels and it fits the theme well. Land the Free Spins feature and the grid moves underwater with a similar soundtrack playing as you spin away.

On the reels, the different coloured gems make up the lower-paying symbols. The different characters make up the higher-paying symbols. The male character is the most rewarding symbol, paying 3, 4, 8, 12, or 25 x the bet for 10+, 12+, 15+, 17+ or 20+ appearing on the grid.

Amplifiers feature

On every spin, you’ll see multipliers appearing above the reels, as the screenshots show in this review. Filling a reel with winning symbols will award the multiplier above it. If more than 1 reel is filled, the multipliers are added together.

The possible multipliers are 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 10x, 12x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 30x, 40x, 50x, 75x or 100x.

Power Up feature

After non-winning symbols are removed from the reels, a winning symbol may randomly power up and clone itself, filling the whole reel.

Booster Row feature

A metal frame may appear around 1 of the rows randomly on any spin. Filling up the row with winning symbols will activate a Booster. This Booster is triggered after no more winning symbols land following a winning wipeout.

The Booster will either create a winning symbol in place of a non-winning symbol and continue the Winning Wipeout, or, if a multiplier is activated, it will increase the multiplier by up to 5x.

Free Spins Feature

Land 3, 4, 5 or 6 Scatters in the base game to get 8, 10, 12 or 15 free spins respectively. It’s important to note that the Booster row is always active during this bonus round and may even move between spins. Furthermore, every reel that gets filled with winning symbols will increase all multipliers above the reels by 1x.

Steam Squad Slot Review Summary – a little flat when it promised so much

Visually, this Steampunk adventure is great. I don’t mind the bonus features either as there’s more than just your standard Free Spins feature at least. We haven’t seen the Scatter Pays mechanic used in too many Red Tiger releases, so it’s refreshing to see it utilised again. One instant comparison I can make is with Sugar Monster, but that offers big max wins and is arguably more appealing.

When I consider the low RTP rate of 95.64% and the 3,235.4 x max wins, I can’t do anything other than put this in the ‘average’ category. The multipliers up to 100x are huge, but that doesn’t translate to payout size when you’re playing. I must admit that when I was thoroughly testing this game, I didn’t land any big wins of note and struggled to trigger the Free Spins feature.
