The Monsters Unchained is played on 5 reels and has between 243 and 15,625 ways to win depending on how many rows are active. It can expand from 3 to 5 rows at any one point once the Minotaur is unchained. More on that further down. Wins are paid when 3 or more matching symbols appear anywhere on adjacent reels from left to right, starting from the leftmost reel.

Theme – Greek mythological madness

The theme in the Monsters Unchained slot game might be all about monsters, but it’s based on Greek Mythology. This is because the 3 monsters in the game are all Greek mythological creatures – Minotaur, Medusa and Cerberus.

The reels are set in an eerie dungeon, with a fire torch flickering in the background. The audio is calm but intense at the same time when spinning the reels. It gives you a sense that something dramatic is about to happen, and it does when you trigger 1 of the bonus features. There’s a green smokey background when the Free Spins feature plays out, and the soundtrack is more intense as if you’re about to go into battle. I like it, although it is quite repetitive.

On the reels, the A-10 Royals make up the lower-paying symbols. These are joined by higher-paying shackles, axes, lanterns and treasure chests. The treasure chest symbol pays the most, awarding 1, 1.5, 2 or 3 x your total stake for 3, 4, 5 or 6 in combination.

Landing Chain Break Scatters will break the chains of the monsters. There are 3 different colours, with each 1 of those breaking a certain monster’s chain. These Scatters appear on every spin except the 10th one, and only 1 Chain Breaker Scatter can land on any 1 spin, with up to 3 of a specific type able to land during the whole 10 spin sequence (1 for each of the monsters).

MEDUSA

Chains are broken by landing the green Chain Breaker Scatter. On the 10th spin, this monster will add Wilds randomly based on the number of its broken chains as follows:

• 3 destroyed chains add 6 or 7 Wilds

CERBERUS

Chains are broken by landing the blue Chain Breaker Scatter. On the 10th spin, this monster will add a win multiplier based on the number of broken chains as follows:

Monster Spins Feature

Land 3 Monster Spins Scatters in the base game of the Monster Unchained slot to trigger this bonus feature. You will get 10 free spins, with 3 extra spins being awarded if you manage to break all of a monster’s chains. That means you can get up to 19 free spins in total.

When a chain is broken during the bonus round, that monster’s feature is triggered, and it plays out in the same way as explained in the previous section. Monsters Unchained Summary – fun but different gameplay

If you’re expecting typical gameplay then you’re reading about the wrong game. The Monsters Unchained slot is anything but, with cycles of 10 spins in the base game that allow for numerous features to be triggered. I like the way it works and it’s something refreshingly different to the norm.

Visually, it’s got the Red Tiger look if that makes sense. The graphics are good and the audio that accompanied the slot isn’t too bad either. Not the best by any means, but the soundtrack fits the game well. When you add in a few features with expanding reels, Wilds and win multipliers, you’ve got yourself a very good slot. The 10,500 x max win potential is nice to see too.

Overall, if you want something different to the usual gameplay you see with a lot of the best UK slot games, you’ll probably enjoy this one. A job well done by Red Tiger and although it might look complicated at first, it’s actually very easy to get to grips with.
