Games developer Quickspin has turned to the age of the Aztecs to create Firestorm, a 5 reel, 3 row, 25 payline video slot. This brightly coloured offering comes with respins and frozen wilds with stakes ranging from between 25p and £250 per spin.
Firestorm is a good looking game – the symbols, which include a selection of colourful precious stones, are nice and crisp and set against a crumbling temple backdrop. The higher paying symbols are set against gold, silver and bronze backgrounds with the lower-value ones against a military grey. The soundtrack has a South American feel with just the tiniest hint of a panpipe.
There are two wild symbols to keep an eye on. First is a standard wild which substitutes for all symbols. There’s also a bonus wild, the burning mask, which is the key to Firestorm’s only bonus feature. Find 2 or more burning masks anywhere on the reels and you’ll trigger the Respin feature.
Once activated, the Burning Mask wilds will be locked in place. So too will a randomly selected symbol and the standard wild. The reels will continue to spin as long as another one of the 3 locking features appear. You can also boost your winnings via a multiplier. The more flaming masks you find, the higher the multiplier will go. 3 masks gives a 2x multiplier, 4 offer 3x, 5 provides 4x with 6 symbols giving 5x. The final winning paylines will then be boosted by the multiplier to give the overall win.
The variance in Firestorm is relatively low. You’re unlikely to win life-changing amounts of coins but you can expect a steady stream of smaller wins, especially via the Respin feature. As only two burning masks are required to trigger it, it comes on a regular basis.
The features may be on the skinny side in Firestorm but pace is high as the Respins appear so often. If you’re after a slot full of interactive bonus features then this Aztec-themed title probably won’t fit the bill- for that I’d recommend the more volatile King Colossus by QuickSpin. If you want something with a steady pace and the chance of regular payouts then this jewel-filled offering is a little gem. If you like the theme, Montezuma by WMS is very good (and much more volatile!).
