Released on the 23^rd of November 2023, the Retro Tapes slot has been produced using HTML5 technology, despite the 80s feel. Retro Tapes Bonus Features

The Retro Tapes slot benefits from 6 bonus features. You have Wild Tape and Star Wild Multiplier symbols which increase the multiplier whilst Instant Prize symbols are worth up to 1,000 x bet each. With Magnet symbols attracting other symbols for a guaranteed win, the Top Charts feature rewards you with free spins. Instant Prize and Wild Tape symbols remain on the grid and then awarded at the end.

Cascade feature

When you land a winning cluster of 5 or more matching symbols, the Cascade feature applies. The winning symbols disappear and the remaining symbols collapse downwards. New symbols then drop in the fill the newly vacated spaces. Allowing for another win, cascades continue until no more new winning clusters land on the grid.

Wild Tape Multiplier feature

Wild Tape symbols substitutes for paying cassettes. However, you will notice every Wild Tape symbol has a multiplier associated with it. Starting at 1x, the multiplier increases by 1 when the Wild Tape is part of 1 or more winning clusters. Known as the Wild Tape Multiplier feature, the Wild Tape symbol spins off the grid when no more cluster wins are created.

Wild Multiplier feature

Look out for Star Wild Multiplier symbols which can appear in the base game (and Top Charts feature). It distributes its own multiplier to all Wild Tape symbols that appear on the grid. Then, it transforms into an Instant Prize symbol of a random value.

Instant Prize feature

On the grid, there are various Instant Prize symbols. When an Instant Prize symbol lands in a cluster of 5 or more symbols, the Instant Prize feature is activated. The total sum of all Instant Prize symbol is collected and awarded. Instant Prize symbols come with values of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500 or 1,000 x your total bet.

Magnet feature

Keep an eye out for the Magnet symbol landing as this activates the Magnet feature. It picks random cassette symbols of 1 kind from the grid and attracts them around the magnet’s position. This will then create a cluster win. Magnet symbols can also attract Instant Prize symbols if they are at least 4 of them on the grid. Once a cluster win is formed, the Magnet symbol transforms into the cassette or Instant Prize symbol (the latter with a random value).

Top Charts feature

The Retro Tapes slot comes alive with the Top Charts feature. This is triggered when 3 or more Wild Tape symbols land anywhere on the grid. 3, 4, 5 or 6 Wild Tape symbols will award 6, 8, 10 or 12 free spins respectively.

Triggering Wild Tape symbols and Instant Prize symbols (if any) from the base game will remain in position for the duration of the feature. Then all empty symbol positions will spin through to land 1 of the following 6 symbols:

Each Instant Prize symbol that lands on the grid will remain in position throughout the feature. Then all Instant Prize symbol clusters will be evaluated at the end of the feature. 1 or 2 extra free spins will be won if you land the Extra Spin symbol and then transform into an Instant Prize symbol with a random value. The feature ends when you run out of free spins or if you fill the grid with symbols.

Retro Tapes Review Summary – join the party + ease your way into grid slots

The Retro Tapes slot has been clearly inspired by the two Jammin’ Jars slots and fans will love it. The quirky and energetic cassette characters are really charming and enchanting. With an 80s feel, it feels like it should feature in the Stranger Things Netflix series.

In terms of the gameplay, it’s fast-paced and focuses on Wild Tape symbols which comes with an increasing multiplier when part of a winning cluster. I like the Star Wild Multiplier which adds its own multiplier to Wild Tape symbols for bigger wins. The Instant Prize feature has been used in multiple Push Gaming slots but there’s nothing wrong with land potential wins of up to 1,000 x your total bet.

What I do like is the Magnet feature which attracts specific cassette symbols or Instant Prize symbols and then transforms itself into that cassette or an Instant Prize. It’s simple but effective. The bigger wins will come from the Top Charts feature naturally but you need luck to play it’s part. Key to landing huge wins are plenty of Wild Tape, Instant Prize and Extra Spin symbols which can lead to multiple big cluster wins.

With 10,000 x bet max wins, Jammin’ Jars and Jammin’ Jars 2 offer much bigger wins with 20,000 and 50,000 x bet top payouts respectively. For that reason, I do think the Retro Rapes slot will be dismissed by fans of it’s predecessors. That said, the max payout will be won once every 1,248,439 spins which is very frequent compared to many other online slots.

In summary, Retro Tapes feels a bit like the House of the Dragon series which is set nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It will please GoT fans but it can’t quite live up to its success.

Back to the game, it’s simple in terms of gameplay with lower max win potential than the 2 Jammin’ Jars games. The bonus features are decent enough but a little more was needed for it to be held in the same regard as the 2 iconic titles it’s based on.
