Theme – what lies beneath?

If you’ve played the original Razor Shark slot, you’ll notice a vast improvement in the visuals and the audio here. The background is very similar, as it should be as you’re at the bottom of the ocean. But you get a sense that you’re a little deeper in this one, with fish swimming on either side of the reels as you spin away.

The symbols look menacing compared to the original and the soundtrack is more intense. You’ll also notice the sound of Jaws every now and then, which adds more excitement to the already thrilling gameplay. It does for me anyway as someone who’s watched the Jaws film. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

Land the Free Spins feature and the reels go deeper and darker, with a more eerie and mysterious soundtrack playing as you spin away anticipating some big wins. There’s also a shipwreck in the background, so you really are at the bottom of the ocean during the bonus round. When you see neon fish on either side of the reels, you know it’s deep.

The symbol animations are a nice touch too and so much better than what we saw from the original slot. I also like the faint sound of running water once the round is over and before you confirm your overall win. You know that feeling when you’ve got your head above water but your ears submerged? Oddly therapeutic if you keep that going for a while before confirming your win. Anyway, I digress. Overall, the theme is absolutely superb and Push Gaming can be proud of what they’ve done here.

On the reels, the lower-paying symbols are made up of anchors, compasses, periscopes and diving helmets. These are joined by higher-paying shark symbols of different colours. The orange shark symbol is the most rewarding, paying 0.6, 2.5 or 7.5 x your total stake for 3, 4 or 5 in combination respectively.

Mystery symbols

These are present on the reels in stacks of 5 and will land anywhere on the reels in the base game and the Free Spins feature. Whenever they land, the Nudge & Reveal feature is triggered.

Nudge & Reveal feature

When this bonus feature is triggered, the Mystery symbols will open to reveal either paying symbols, Wild Shark symbols or Golden Shark symbols. If paying symbols are revealed, any existing win lines are paid out. Hit the spin button after the reveal and the Mystery symbols will nudge down 1 position with the rest of the reels spinning normally. This process continues until there are no Mystery symbols left on the reels.

Razor Reveal feature

If a Mystery symbol reveals the Golden Shark symbol (as explained above), the Razor Reveal feature is triggered. This can happen in the base game or during the Free Spins feature. Each position with a Golden Shark symbol will spin through different prizes, revealing the following:

All Instant Prize symbols are removed from the reels once they’re collected. The empty positions will also spin through all of the possible prizes.
Converter	This will spin through Paying symbols that are on the reels a the time. When one land, all symbols of the same type will be converted into Golden Shark symbols, thus triggering the Razor Reveal feature.
Nudge Up	This can only land in the Free Spins feature. Each one that lands will cause the Mystery Stacks to nudge up by 1 position.

Free Spins feature

The Scatter symbol is the Torpedo symbol. Land 3 or more of these anywhere on the reels in the base game or the Razor Reveal feature to trigger the Free Spins feature. Here’s what multiplier you’ll start with depending on how many Torpedo symbols land:

When the bonus round starts, reels 2 and 4 are filled with Mystery symbols. On each spin, those symbols will nudge down by 1 position, which causes the Total Multiplier to increase by 1. Spin away until there are no Mystery symbols left anywhere on the reels.

Push Bet

This may or may not be available in your country. If it is, you can activate it in the same place you adjust your total bet. If you choose to activate it, your base bet will increase by 10%. This will increase the chance of triggering the Free Spins feature. Note that using Push Bet will change the symbols that were on the reels at the end of the previous spin.

Before I give my own verdict on this slot, here’s what Push Gaming had to say about why they made this game:

• We wanted to give a second life to the new well-known old characters, so we upgraded them but kept the same personalities.
• Not only have we upgraded the visuals in this game. The grid is larger, the sharks are meaner, and the wins are bigger!
• The Razor Reveal Feature is now packed with additional symbols like Collector, Multiplier, and one never seen before, the Convertor. The addition of these symbols move the potential to another level.
• There are different levels of Free Spins. When you land more than 3 Torpedo symbols, you will get the bigger starting multiplier, increasing your initial odds of winning.
• We wanted to increase the potential of the original game, add features that have already proven to be entertaining in Big Bamboo, as well as add something unique to the gameplay. This is Razor like you’ve never seen it before!

If I’m being completely honest, the Razor Returns slot has blown me away. With a lot of follow-ups to an original game, you might see slight improvements and think to yourself ‘OK, great, they’ve done well here’. But that is an understatement with this sequel. The visuals are great, the audio is fantastic and the overall gameplay is superb. I have nothing negative to say about this Push Gaming delight. Hats off to the developers, it’s brilliant.

The original was good and I enjoyed the big potential payouts that came with it. But the Razor Returns slot blows that out of the water with 100,000 x max wins. You just don’t see this potential in many slots on the market. Volatility is high, as expected, but the RTP rate is still very healthy at 96.55%, which is great to see.

One huge difference versus the original is the bigger reel size, which improves the overall gameplay in my opinion. They’ve kept the old characters and mechanics too, which is excellent but haven’t just produced another run-of-the-mill sequel.

The only thing I thought about was the max win figures: 1 in 397,360,429 as normal compared to 1 in 27,036,048 with Push Bet active. The Push Bet costs 10% extra, but the odds of landing the max win are around 14 x more likely. This sounds too good to be true but we’ll take it.

The Razor Return slot is bigger and better in every way. I can’t fault it. Please give the demo a try and see for yourself just how good this slot is. Everyone raved about Money Train 3 from Relax Gaming when that came out. This one deserves similar plaudits.
