The Rat King slot takes place on a 6×6 grid with a Pay Anywhere mechanic. With no traditional paylines, winning combinations are formed when 7 or more matching symbols appear anywhere on the grid.

Also known as Scatter Pays, matching symbols don’t need to appear connected/adjacent to one another. The more matching symbols anywhere on the grid, the larger the payout. It works exactly like in Pragmatic Play’s Sweet Bonanza slot.

Rat King Bonus Features

The Rat King slot has 6 bonus features. With cascades and symbol collapses, matching 7+ Dud symbols will lead to more symbols being added to the grid. If Star symbols appear on the bottom-most position, it’s collected with the multiplier (up to 500x) applied to your total win. Multiple Star symbol multipliers are possible too. This applies during the Free Spins feature where the overall multiplier doesn’t reset for wins of up to 10,000 x bet.

Cascading and Collapsing feature

When a winning combination is formed (i.e. 7+ matching symbols anywhere on the grid), the Cascading and Collapsing feature is triggered. A payout occurs and the winning symbols are removed. The remaining symbols collapse downwards with new symbols cascading in from above to fill the empty positions on the grid. This continues until no more new wins are created

Dud Symbols feature

On the grid, you will see greyed-out Dud symbols with no value or payouts. If you match a minimum of 7 of the same Dud symbol, the Dud Symbols feature will be triggered. The Dud symbols disappear from the grid to make way for new symbols to fall in.

Collection Boxes feature

At the bottom of the grid, you will see Collection Boxes. When the Star symbol lands in the bottom-most position on the grid, it’s collected in the Collection Boxes. Once collected, the Star symbol multiplier will be added to the multiplier counter for the current spin.

Furthermore, Star symbols are multipliers worth between 2x and 500x. You can collect various Star symbols with all the accumulated multipliers applying to the total win for the current spin. This is known as the Collection Boxes feature.

Free Spins feature

The Rat King slot also benefits from a Free Spins feature. It’s triggered when 3 or more Rat King Scatter symbols are collected in a single spin. These are collected in the Collection Boxes when they land in the bottom-most position.

You can see a meter to the left of the grid which shows how many scatters you’ve collected. 3, 4 or 5 Rat King Scatters will award 10, 15 or 20 free spins respectively. During the feature, 3 additional free spins are awarded when a Rat King Scatter is collected.

When the Star symbol is collected and its multiplier is added to the multiplier counter, it multiplies the total win for that free spin. Push Bet feature

Rat King Review Summary: Star multipliers key to raiding the sweet factory

Graphically, the retro/80s vibe in the Rat King slot will divide opinion. I personally like the design and visuals but younger slots player may prefer sharper graphics and smoother animations. Resembling an arcade video game, the soundtrack and mechanical sound effects really tie into the theme.

In terms of the bonus features, wins lead to collapses and cascades (pretty standard). The Dud symbols are needed with the Pay Anywhere mechanic but landing 7+ of the same type will see them removed from the grid to make way for new symbols.

Now, Rat King is all about landing Star symbols in the bottom-most position on the grid. These are collected (in Collection Boxes) which sees their multiplier added to the overall multiplier for your current spin. With Star symbol multipliers worth up to 500x, multiple Star symbols can see big multiplier totals applied to your win.

Then you have the all-important Free Spins feature where you can begin with up to 20 free spins. With more to be won, Star symbol multipliers are collected and added to the overall multiplier as in the base game. However, the multiplier doesn’t reset and can only increase (by collecting more Star symbols).

Basically, all the various bonus features combine in the Rat King slot. Collapses and cascades will see symbols fall down the grid with Star and Scatter symbols hopefully reaching the bottom-most position to be collected. That’s the key to increasing the overall multiplier.

If you do this enough times in the free spins, huge wins are possible, up to 10,000 x bet. The Push Bet feature may cost 20% more per spin but you get a slight increase in the RTP and a higher chance of entering the Free Spins feature. On top of this, the max win probability decreases from 1 in 11.2 million spins to 1 in 8.3 million spins. That’s a big difference for a small bet increase: worth it in my opinion.

To summarise, the Rat King slot will divide opinion graphically but the gameplay is solid. The bonus features combine nicely with the potential for big multipliers and payouts in both the base game and free spins.
