Theme – meet the Boss Bear in the shady part of the city

This slot takes you to the back streets of Japan. It almost feels like it’s an animated version of what happens with Yakuza in the country. Yakuza are essentially organised crime syndicates. Except here we’ve got pandas, monkeys and wolves instead.

The visuals are fantastic and I really like the soundtrack that accompanies the game. It’s got a hip-hop yet traditional sound, which works really well. Land the Free Spins feature and the reels move inside a traditional Japanese room with suspenseful audio as you spin the reels. Again, both visually and overall it’s brilliant. I really like how Push Gaming has put it all together. The distinctive gong at the end of the bonus round is a nice touch too and another nod to Japanese origins.

On the reels, the playing card suits of clubs, spades, diamonds and hearts make up the lower-paying symbols alongside a ninja star and a pistol. the higher-paying symbols are the animals in the game – a wolf, a monkey and a panda. The panda is the most rewarding symbol, paying 0.5, 2, 10 or 100 x the bet for 2, 3, 4 or 5 in combination respectively.

Boss Bear Bonus Features

There are 9 bonus features in the Boss Bear slot game. From free spins and multipliers to a coin feature with numerous symbols, there’s a lot going on. Let’s take you through everything step by step, starting with the Reveal symbols.

Reveal Symbols

During the base game and the Free Spins feature, Reveal symbols can land in stacks anywhere on the reels. Once they land, all of these symbols will reveal the same type of symbol. It’ll either be Wilds or any standard paying symbol.

If Reveal symbols manage to land on at least 3 consecutive reels regardless of their position, all of these symbols will turn into Golden Reveal symbols. This will trigger the Coin feature, which leads us nicely on…

Coin Drop Feature

Each position on the reels that is taken up by a Golden Reveal symbol will turn into a coin and spin through different prizes. During this bonus feature, the following symbols can land:

Instant Prize	The values and the multiplier values of these symbols if they land are: 1x, 2x, 5x, 10x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x, 500x and 1,000x.
Multiplier	When this symbol lands, it will multiply the value of all Instant Prize symbols and Collector symbols on the reels but the value shown in the Multiplier symbol. This symbol is then removed and the empty position will spin through all of the possible prizes. The multiplier values are 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x.
Collector	This symbol will collect the value of all other Instant Prize and Collector symbols when it lands. All Instant Prize symbols will then disappear from the reels and empty positions will spin through all of the possible prizes.
Nudge	The stack of Golden Reveal symbols will expand and cover the whole reel where the Nudge symbol lands. The Nudge symbol is then removed from the reels. New empty positions will turn into coins and spin through all of the possible prizes except for the Nudge symbol.

Free Spins Feature

Land 3 or more Scatters in the Coin feature or the base game of the Boss Bear slot to trigger this feature. Here’s how many free spins you will get depending on how many Scatters land:

• 3 Scatters = 7 free spins with no low-paying symbols converted to Reveal symbols.
• 4 Scatters = 8 free spins with 2 low-paying symbols converted to Reveal symbols.
• 5 Scatters = 9 free spins with 4 low-paying symbols converted to Reveal symbols.

Boss Bear is a decent sequel to Big Bamboo which offers lower win potential but better and improved bonus features.

If you were a fan of Big Bamboo, you’ll no doubt enjoy this follow-up. Ok, so the max win has been chopped in half from 50,000 x bet to 25,000 x bet, but it’s still a generous offering and beats a lot of the slots on the market today. The theme and the features are brilliant too.

The gameplay is fairly similar to its predecessor, but the Reveal symbols have been improved and the Nudge symbol is a great addition. I was a little disappointed to see the Coin values drop from 5,000 x to 1,000 x compared to the previous release. But with the lower max win potential, that was to be expected.

Here’s what Push Gaming says about its release:

• With the success of Big Bamboo and the ‘cute’ Panda being a fan favourite – we wanted to give players a new take on the Panda Symbol, giving them a Panda that is the Boss of a notorious syndicate.

I agree with the above points and I thoroughly enjoyed testing Boss Bear. But I was still thinking of Big Bamboo while spinning away, which highlighted to me just how good that slot was. I have to give this a similar rating. The only reason I’ve given this slightly less of a score is due to the win potential being reduced. Other than that, the bonus features, in my opinion, have been improved, and I’m a big fan of the theme, which is unique.
