Theme – not your regular Christmas scene

Starlight Christmas might sound like a quaint holiday themed Hallmark movie, but in fact it’s simply a Christmas reskinning of Pragmatic Play’s Starlight Princess slot. This means it boasts Anime-styled graphics, with a red-headed princess floating to the right of the reels and a snowy scene in the distance.

Whilst the theme offers something more original than most Christmas slots, we would have liked the provider to take the festive feeling a little further. Instead, besides some added jingle bells, the soundtrack is the same as the original game and so are the symbols.

Coloured gemstones make up the lower end of the payable, whilst higher paying symbols include stars, moons and hearts. The sun symbol is the highest paying, offering you up to 50 x your stake.
Like many scatter pay slots, there’s no wild symbol to be found but there is a scatter symbol represented by a kitten. The scatter carries payouts of up to 100 x your stake, and 4 or more scatters triggers the Free Spins feature. .

Tumble Feature

Each time you achieve a win, the Tumble feature is activated. Any winning symbols are blasted off the reels and new symbols drop in and replace them. If the new symbols also help form a win, a new payout follows. The tumble feature continues until no new wins are formed.

Heart Multipliers Feature

On any spin, a special heart multiplier may appear. There are four different multiplier symbols (green, blue, pink and gold), though the colour difference doesn’t signify anything. Instead, any multiplier symbol can carry a value of between 2 and 500 x your bet.

The Tumble feature and the Heart Multiplier feature can activate at the same time, which means the multiplier value is applied to all wins in the tumble sequence. Additional multiplier symbols can also appear with each tumble. In this scenario, the values of all present multipliers are added together, to give you an even bigger win.

Free Spins Feature

Landing 4 or more scatters anywhere on the reels awards you 15 free spins. This can be achieved in one single spin, or via the tumble feature. So long as 4 or more scatters are present after the tumble sequence ends, you’ll activate the Free Spins round.

As in the base game, the heart multiplier symbols are the key to winning big here. The difference is that if you land a winning spin with heart multiplier, the multiplier amount is added to a Total Multiplier value. For instance, if you win a spin with a 3 x multiplier, and then a spin with a 10 x multiplier, your total winnings from the Free Spins bonus feature will be multiplied by 13.

You can also retrigger the Free Spins feature by landing 3 or more scatters anywhere on the reels. This gives you 5 extra spins and, in theory, can lead to unlimited spins so long as more scatters land.

Finally, players in certain jurisdictions (not the UK) may also buy their way into the Free Spins round for the price of 100 x your bet.

Ante Bet Feature

The Starlight Christmas slot also has an Ante Bet feature. This costs you an extra 25% per spin (so a £1 rises to £1.25) and gives you double the chance of triggering the Free Spins feature by introducing more scatter symbols in the base game.

Starlight Christmas Review Summary – a bit of a festive flop

Overall, Starlight Christmas is a rather basic slot, much like the original version. That said, the graphics look great and it’s definitely a unique take on the Christmas theme. It’s also less angelic than it seems, as the high volatility can leave you spinning for a while without a single win.

The high variance is worth it, however, once you trigger the Free Spins feature and start racking up Heart Multipliers and tumbling wins. Unfortunately, this doesn’t make up for it being a disappointing release.

Whilst we don’t have anything against a Christmas reskinning (most slots providers release one every year), the fact that this is is a reskinning of another reskin is anti-climatic. The original Starlight Princess was identical to Gates of Olympus, which in turn was very similar to Sweet Bonanza. If we add in the similarities to Santa’s Great Gifts, another Pragmatic Play holiday slot, then it all gets a bit much.

Unless you’re really keen on playing Christmas or Anime themed slots, we’d give Starlight Christmas a miss. We’d suggest getting Fairytale of New York up on Spotify and spinning Sweet Bonanza instead, which boasts higher max wins and a similar RTP rate.
