A galactic gold rush offers potentially rich rewards in Orbital Mining, a sci-fi themed 5 reel, 25 payline slot from Pragmatic Play. The likeliest way to dig up a decent haul of treasure comes via the feature round which offers up to 33 free spins and multipliers that can boost payouts by up to 6x. Blast off, on tablet, mobile and desktop devices from between 25p and £125 per spin.

The design in Orbital Mining has a definite futuristic feel – rather than spinning, symbols appear in position like a flashlight from a camera. Set against a star-filled backdrop, the reels include 5 lumps of lower value space rock which award payouts of between 5 and 100 coins.

They’re joined by 5 members of the mining ship’s crew – the most rewarding of these offers payouts of 5, 20, 75 or 500 coins if you land 2, 3, 4 or 5 in combination. The Space Guardian is the game’s wild, replacing all other symbols with the exception of the scatter.

The green chain of atoms is the scatter – landing 3, 4 or 5 of these will get you a payout of 5, 20 or 100 times your stake. You’ll also trigger the Smuggled Goods Scan Bonus feature.

Once triggered, you’ll be taken to a new screen and presented with a choice of moons and asteroids orbiting a planet. Pick 2 of them which will reveal free spins and multipliers which will be added to your initial haul of 8 free spins with all payouts doubled. There’s up to 33 free spins with a 6x multiplier on offer!

We found the bonus feature quite tricky to land. The potentially large number of free spins on offer plus the big multiplier can make it worth the wait though. Expect plenty of lean spells when your virtual drilling will unearth very little. Deep pockets and plenty of patience are recommended here. We’d put the variance in the medium to high range.

We were pleasantly surprised by Orbital Mining – the subject matter doesn’t really get the pulse racing but the combination of slick visuals, brooding soundtrack and an impressive feature round make it a very playable proposition.

Get lucky with the bonus round and land a large number of free spins with a big multiplier and this mining ship can unearth decent amount of gold. It has some similarities in terms of the bonus feature to Playtech’s Great Blue which can only be a good thing.
