The Loki’s Riches slot is played on a 7×7 grid and uses the scatter pays mechanic. All symbols pay in blocks of 5 or more symbols connected vertically or horizontally. When a winning combination lands, those symbols will disappear to make way for new ones coming from above. This process will continue until no new winners are formed.

Theme: join the god of mischief

Loki is a god in Norse Mythology and your aim here is to aid him in acquiring a treasure trove of prizes. The reels are set somewhere in Scandinavia I assume as the Northern Lights are apparent in the background with its green glow. Loki is also to the right of the reels in green, although he doesn’t actually do anything other than stand there.

The audio is quite dramatic but it’s difficult to say that it fits well with the theme. They’ve tried, but I can’t quite convince myself that it works. It’s very repetitive too, which is something I don’t enjoy personally. Land the Free Spins feature and the soundtrack takes a more dramatic turn as the background turns to fire as if you’re spinning away in front of an active volcano. Loki to the right of the reels comes alive too during the bonus round, which is a nice touch. Visually it’s not too bad and there’s plenty going on to keep your eyes fixated on the grid as you spin away.

On the reels, the lower-paying symbols consist of different coloured gemstones with rune symbols on. These are joined by higher-paying shields, hammers, rings and Golden Loki symbols. The Golden Loki symbol pays the most, awarding 2 x the bet for just 5 in combination all the way up to a whopping 10,000 x the bet for 25+.

There’s no Wild in the game. The Scatter symbol is a glowing book, which might have you thinking it could be a Book Of slot but it’s not. It looks similar and 4 or more will trigger the Free Spins feature rather than the usual 3 Scatters in most other slot games.

Special Expanding Symbol

A random paying symbol is selected in the base game to be the Special Expanding symbol. This means it will not explode as part of tumbles. Instead, at the end of all tumbles, it will expand into a group of 4 symbols of the same type, 2×2 in size, and all winning combinations are then paid out.

By default, it will expand towards right-down but will expand right-up if it’s at the bottom of reel 1. If it’s at the bottom of reel 7 on the grid, it will expand left-up. When it’s expanding, different instances of the same symbol can expand into the same place and overlap each other. If this happens, all instances of the symbol in 1 place are counted as 1 single symbol.

Free Spins feature

Land 4 or more Scatters on the grid to trigger this bonus feature. You will be awarded 10 free spins. Before the bonus round begins, a paying symbol is selected randomly to be the Special Expanding symbol for the duration of the bonus feature. Simply spin away until your free spins run out. For a god that’s meant to behave maliciously and cause mischief, this slot does anything but unfortunately. A fun slot to play for a while, but an extra bonus feature would have been a great additional to an otherwise average game.

As far as Norse Mythology slots go, this isn’t up there with some of the best such as Playtech’s Age of the Gods Norse: Book of Dwarves or Play’n GO’s Viking Runecraft: Apocalypse. But it’s not bad by any means. The 10,000 x max wins and above-average RTP rate are 2 positives that are immediately apparent. I enjoyed the Free Spins feature but I couldn’t help but think that just one more bonus feature would have propelled this game to new heights and take this into the 4+ when it comes to our ratings.

The Special Expanding Symbol feature is a nice touch, but it really doesn’t enhance the gameplay unless you’re enjoying the Free Spins feature in my opinion. The base game is a little flat. If you’re a fan of Norse Mythology, you’ll probably enjoy what this has to offer for a while, but I do question the longevity value here. That’s why it gets a 3.6 rating from me. But don’t hesitate to try the free demo and decide for yourself.
