Based on a classic ancient tale, Journey to the West is a historical Chinese themed slot from Pragmatic Play. Available on mobile, tablet and desktop devices, it’s a 5 reel, 25 payline game that comes with classy design, stacked symbols and a free spins feature where multipliers of up to 5x are on offer. Play from between 25p and £125 per spin.
The design in Journey to the West is superb – set within a traditional Chinese building with lanterns swaying gently in the breeze, the reels include 4 lower value letters and a quartet of historical characters who appear in the book on which this slot is based. They are Sha Wujing, Zhu Bajie aka Pigsy, Xuanzang and Sun Wukong aka The Monkey King.
You only need to land 2 of the character symbols to create a winner. All symbols can land fully stacked. The Monkey King is the most rewarding, paying 100 coins if you land 5 on a payline. The standard symbols are joined by a wild which replaces all other symbols bar the scatter – it too can land fully stacked and awards payouts of 10, 30, 100 or 400 coins.
The golden dragons symbol is the scatter – 3 or more of this symbol anywhere on the reels will trigger the Free Spins feature and with it an initial haul of 5 free spins. You’ll then have a decision to make – choose from 1 of the 4 main characters or the wild. Extra stacks of this symbol will be added to the reels for your free spins. Each 1 offers a special multiplier award when it forms part of a winning combination:
- Wild wins pay 1x
- Monkey King wins pay 2x
- Xuanzang wins pay 3x
- Pigsy wins pay 4x
- Sha wins pay 5x
If you manage to land 3 scatters on a free spin during the feature, another 3 free spins will be added to your total. There are no limits to how many additional free spins you can retrigger too.
Journey to the West looks and sounds terrific, with the stacked symbols working to great effect – we found the Free Spins feature to be a real hit and miss affair, missing completely on some occasions but hitting it big on others. We did enjoy some nifty success in the base game though thanks to the stacked wilds. We’d put the variance in the medium to high range.
Journey to the West is considered a classic of Chinese literature and this slot version is a worthy adaptation. I also recommend Playtech’s Sun Wukong which has a very similar theme.
