An ancient port city made up of elegant sandstone buildings and beautiful turquoise seas forms the backdrop to the action in Heroic Spins. The regal purple reels are edged by a pair of mighty marble columns. There, you’ll find lower value playing card suits and a strange spade-style symbol. They’re joined by an owl, a one-eyed monster, a treasure chest overflowing with gold coins and a dragon. The princess is the most rewarding standard symbol. She pays 1.5, 2.5 or 5 x stake if you land 3, 4 or 5 in a line.

The ram’s head is the wild. This can appear on reels 2, 3 and 4 only. As usual, it substitutes for everything bar the scatter. That scatter is the soldier. An animated version of the soldier also appears to the side of the reels, springing into life at regular intervals when the expanding wilds come into play.

I liked the cartoon-style visuals here. They’re bright, bold and super sharp.

The orchestral soundtrack is rather understated. You’ll hear lots of shouting from the soldier though which can get a bit grating. I preferred playing with just the soundtrack playing, minus the ambient chatter. Head to the settings and adjust to suit.

Expanding Wild feature

Whenever a wild lands on the middle 3 reels, it expands to turn the whole of that reel wild. If there are 2 wilds on the reels before the expansion, the stacked wilds benefit from a 2x multiplier. If you fill the whole of a reel with wilds before an expansion, all the wilds get a 3x multiplier boost. Better still is if you land more than one wild in the same winning combination. In that happy circumstance, the multipliers are combined. For example, a win that included 2x and 3x multiplier wilds would receive a 6x payout boost.

Free Spins feature

Land 3 or more scatters on the same spin to trigger the Free Spins bonus. Before the round starts, you’ll spin a wheel of fortune. This decides how many free spins you’ll receive and what multiplier will be active during those free spins. Depending on where the pointer lands, you’ll receive between 8 and 50 free spins. Multipliers range from between 2x right up to a massive 100x!

This mash up of fire-breathing dragons and the classical world comes together rather well. Visually, it is excellent. The imagery is crisp and fresh. The gameplay delivers a decent amount of action too. The expanding wilds appear regularly, even during base gameplay. I found the free spins offered the best opportunities. You need to land a big multiplier from the fortune wheel to really get things moving, especially if you combine with multiple expanding wilds on the same spin.

Pragmatic Play hasn’t reinvented the wheel here. You’ll find expanding wilds, free spins and multipliers in plenty of other slots. What they have created is a stylish and playable take on the ever-popular ancient theme. If you like donning your virtual toga, Heroic Spins should appeal.
