Theme – head deep into the Mexican jungle

The reels are set in the Aztec jungle somewhere in Mexico, with what looks like the famous temple from Chichen Itza in the background to the right and some lovely waterfalls to the left. The bold colours on the reels are fantastic, and I like the effects of the symbols when the Tumbles occur. It plays a melody when the winnings are totalled up too, which doesn’t really feel like it matches the theme, but I’m OK with it.

The main soundtrack is in keeping with the Aztec theme, with a tribal feel and the sound of traditional instruments such as clay flutes, which are a constant throughout. Land the Free spins feature and the reels move inside the temple, with the audio speeding up to add to the overall intensity as you use your free spins. Pragmatic has been guilty of adding in very basic audio in the past with some slots, but I like what they’ve done here.

On the reels, the A-9 Royals make up the lower-paying symbols. These are joined by higher-paying fish, head and mask symbols. The gold mask symbol is the most lucrative, paying 1, 5, 10 or 20 x the bet for 3, 4, 5 or 6 in combination respectively.

The game’s Wild is an Aztec warrior/chief, which substitutes for all symbols except Scatter and appears on reels 3, 4, 5 and 6. What’s great about the Wild is that it can land 1×4 in size to cover a whole reel, thus potentially increasing the multiplier just like that.

Fortunes of the Aztec Slot Review Summary – a fun Aztec adventure

As soon as I loaded this slot, I knew that I was going to like it as I appreciated the visuals and the soundtrack straight away. Pragmatic Play has done a great job with the colours, the background graphics and the audio in both the base game and the Free Spins features.

When you consider that the max win potential is 10,000 x the bet, the RTP rate is well above average at 96.42% and the hit rate is 1 in 3, it’s already building up to be a really good slot without mentioning the bonus features yet. OK, so it’s difficult to do an Aztec-themed slot that brings some unique touches, and there are none here, but it’s still a very well-put-together game.

Although the Free Spins feature is fairly basic, I like the addition of the Win Multiplier that increases by 1x when an entire reel is removed during the Tumbles. This just enhances the features overall and puts this slot above some similar releases that only have the standard Free Spins feature. Overall, it’s not going to blow you away, but the Fortunes of the Aztec slot is one of the better Aztec-themed slots on the market in my opinion.
