The X-Files is a 5 reel, 20 payline slot by Playtech that is based on the American science fiction drama TV series. Playable from 20p to £500 a spin on all devices, it comes with multiplier wilds that can combine to boost wins by a 25x multiplier. There’s also a free spins feature where rifts lock in place and display multipliers up to a combined 25x.

Visually, The X-Files is set in an eerie and dark forest and resembles scenes from the actual television series. With a dramatic soundtrack, it all adds to the suspense. Symbols on the reels include A, K, Q and J playing cards as well as aliens hands, torches and silhouette figures with torchlights. You will also see Fox Mulder (played by David Duchovny) and Sana Scully (played by Gillian Anderson) – they are the most rewarding symbols giving you 10 times your stake for 5 across a payline.

You also have a wild symbol which replaces all other symbols bar the scatter – 5 of them on a payline will also give you 10 times your stake. However, each wild symbol has a multiplier value of 1x, 2x, 3x or 5x. When a winning combination includes multiple wilds, the wilds are added together – if you were to get 3 5x wilds, you would benefit from a 15x multiplier. If you’re really lucky, you can get 5 5x multipliers which can result in a 25x multiplier being applied – this is known as the Multiplier Wild Symbols feature.

The X-Files also comes with a Locking Rift Free Games feature which is played when you get the spaceship scatter symbol landing – 3, 4 or 5 will trigger the feature and give you 7, 10 or 20 free spins respectively. Look out for rifts landing as these lock in place when they land. Multiplier wild symbols spin through the rifts on each free spin – this could lead to a 25x multiplier being applied on every free spin if you’re lucky!

The X-Files is actually quite a simple slot in reality – it’s all about the multiplier wilds that can give you 25x multipliers on each winning spin/free spin. The bigger rewards will come in the Locking Rift Free Games feature as the rifts lock in place meaning – in theory, you could get up to 1,000 times your stake on each spin/free spin.

It’s a medium variance game and Playtech would have had a much better slot if they increased the value of the symbols a little. Overall, it looks superb and can be lucrative if the multiplier wilds land nicely. If you like branded content, you’re in safe hands with Playtech as they offer you plenty – I recommend the blockbuster Justice League and the movie-inspired Top Gun.
