Space Invaders is a 5 reel, 10 payline slot powered by Playtech. Playable on desktop, mobile and tablet devices from just 10p to as much as £100 per spin, this game is based on the original arcade video game which was created by Tomohiro Nishikado in 1978. Produced by Taito, it become a worldwide phenomenon and was one of the forerunners of modern video gaming.
The slot version benefits from both ways wins where you need to defend planet Earth from extra-terrestrial enemies – graphically, it does justice to the original arcade game as retro gaming nostalgia will sink in. Symbols on the reels include 3 pixelated aliens, spaceships, flying saucers, monsters and planets. All symbols can appear stacked with the highest value symbol being the planet (rewarding you with 150 times your line stake).
In terms of features, firstly there is the Invaders Turn Wild feature – look out for the cannon below the reels which can fire whenever it stops under reel 2 or 4. The cannon then blasts away low value symbols on the reel above and transforms them into wild symbols (if they create a win). If you get a win with a wild, your outcome will be doubled.
Look out for the UFO flying above the reels – if the UFO and cannon align when the reels stop, you will trigger the UFO Wild feature. The cannon will then shoot the UFO rewarding you with a free re-spin with up to 9 added wilds. This can lead to huge wins obviously if you get 5 or more wilds.
Space Invaders may be simple but it’s surprisingly hypnotic and intriguing. The graphics and animations perfectly depict the retro arcade game with the soundtrack adding to the excitement. I feel that Space Invaders may be to Playtech what Starburst is to Net Entertainment.
I found the variance to be in the middle with the UFO Wild feature the most rewarding – I managed to get 7 wilds once which led to a huge 455 times stake win. Most of the time, you’ll be lucky to win 20 times your stake though. Overall, Playtech has done a superb job at bringing this arcade classic back to life.
