Magical Stacks is a Playtech-powered slot game only available to play on desktop (i.e. laptop or PC) devices. With 5 reels and 20 paylines, it can be played from 20p to £2,000 a spin. The game has a Japanese arcade feel with plenty of neon lights and bold imagery.
Most Japanese-orientated slots these days are based on Samurai warriors but Magical Stacks is different – it has an anime feel to it with Manga comic style graphics and an arcade influence as cherries, melons, bells and bars appear on the reels.
The highest paying symbol is the girl with pink hair symbol – she is also the wild. If you’re lucky enough to get 5 on a payline, you will win 500 times your line bet. The symbol also substitutes for any other symbol in the game, except the scatter. The girl then changes to have white hair in the free spins feature (described below).
The main attraction is the Super Magical Free Games feature which is played when you get 3 or more white cat scatter symbols anywhere in view – you will receive 10 free spins and benefit from a dynamic multiplier. Initially, a random multiplier of either 2x, 3x, 4x or even 5x is awarded at the beginning.
Look out for the gold coin symbol on the 5th and final reel as this will increase the multiplier by 1 – free spins without the gold coin symbol will reduce the multiplier by 1 too. For your information, the multiplier cannot exceed 5x and cannot drop below 2x.
The reels in the feature are full of Mystery Stacks (the box with the question mark symbol) – they can appear at random during the base game and more frequently during the feature to randomly turn into any of the game symbols (except the gold coin and white cat). For example, if you were to get 5 Mystery symbols on a free spin, they will also transform into the same symbol on that free spin.
The free spins feature can also reward you with additional free spins – you will receive 10 more free spins for every 3 white cat scatter symbols you get during a free spin. The good thing is that more free spins can be won infinitely with 70 my best return yet.
I found Magical Stacks to be a fast-paced game with superb graphics and animations – it’s certainly a little odd but the catchy soundtrack and frantic pace is something I rather enjoyed. The variance is somewhere in the middle with the biggest wins almost certainly coming in the Super Magical Free Games feature (if you get plenty of Mystery Stacks with a 5x multiplier!). Theme wise, the only game that comes remotely close is Koi Princess by NetEnt.
