Not to be confused by the Microgaming version, Jekyll & Hyde is powered by Playtech and is a 5 reel, 25 payline slot which can be played from 25p to £2,500 a spin. The slot is inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novel (The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde).
Graphically superb, it’s quite dark in appearance with an eerie soundtrack playing as you spin the reels – symbols on the reels include scrolls, top hats, Jekyll (and Hyde), 2 female assistants and potion bottles. Dr Jekyll is the highest value symbol rewarding you with 1,000 times your line bet if you get 5 on a payline. The wild appears on the 3 middle reels and expands to fill the entire reel if this expansion creates a winning combination.
As with the Wild Wishes slot game, you need to decide if you want the feature on or off – having it on with give you access to the free spins feature (described in detail below). However, it will double your stake from 50p (minimum stake) to £5,000 a spin (maximum stake).
Jekyll & Hyde is all about the Free Games feature which is played when you land 3 or more potion bottles scatters anywhere on the reels. The normal scatter is green but the powered up scatter is glowing red and can help you trigger the feature even when 1 position above or below the reels.
In the Free Games feature, there are 2 modes: Jekyll Spins and Hyde Spins – both of them continue until you get 4 scatters on the last reel. Every time the scatter hits, part of the potion is used up – after 4 hits, the bottle breaks with the feature ending. I’ve benefited from 46 free spins before.
During the Hyde Spins mode, the 3 highest value symbols become additional wild symbols – after a potion bottle lands, an additional high value symbol becomes wild. Once all the symbols are wild, the real big wins are a realistic possibility.
During the Jekyll mode, a potion bottle scatter landing will increase the wild multiplier from 1x to 2x to 3x to 5x – this means if you were to get a scatter on 4 free spins, the multiplier will increase to 5x! Let’s just hope you get plenty of free spins before that last potion bottle breaks (which ends the feature).
I found Jekyll & Hyde to be a medium game – the expanding wild in the base game has led to some huge wins (especially since I got wilds on all 3 reels on 2 consecutive spins). The Free Games feature is a good one with the Jekyll mode being particularly kind to me due to the 5x multiplier. The Hyde mode is also rewarding due to having 3 extra wilds on the reels – my best outcome was a cool 554 times my stake!
